Haven’t used 4x4 in forever. Went out in the snow today and put into 4x4 low on the dash switch. Felt a small vibration. Pulled over didn’t see anything. Locked in the hubs. Got in and as soon as I hit the gas, huge vibration. Let off gas, no vibration. Back on the gas, huge vibration. Unlocked hubs and left in 4x4 low and slight vibration but didn’t feel like the 4x4 was working.
My guess one of the u joints or all of them are not happy in either the front driveshaft or axle drive shafts.
When you unlocked the hubs you had less vibration, but still had some. That points to front DS, when you locked em up you had more, that points to axle shafts. 2wd you had none.
This is probably why they are out "Haven’t used 4x4 in forever."
Bet it crunches real bad in the front when making turns with 4x4 engaged too. U joints
I guess that’s probably true. I only use 4x4 when coming out of boat ramps or pulling people out of mud or ditches. Just haven’t used it to drive at speeds in a while. Unfortunately have a 900 mile trip I’m leaving for tomorrow evening up to the mountains of WV. Gotta figure this out quick
Not clunky when turning. I’m aware that 4lo only comes on when stopped in neutral with foot on brake.
I got it to my friends shop and have it on jacks now lookin at it. Don’t see anything initially. U-joints seem ok.
Gonna disconnect rear drive shaft and get the fronts spinning to see if I can see the problem
