well i can't narrow down the problem very well and am afraid to mess with it to much before i see what the builder says. i want it fixed, this is very frustating. thanks for all the help guys, i'll let you know what the builder says
I would tell the builder that I am very concerned and then get all the info you can on the cam, lifters, rockers. Again an agressive hydralic cam will tick a little but not like a solid. High leak down lifters as in the Rhodes type can really make a lot of noise.
I had a Comp Cams 268 that acted something like that.
Are you absolutley sure that your noise is coming from the cylinder head?
You have an eccentric on your cam that operates the fuel pump. If its new it might be making some noise that can sound like lifter noise, mine did this and ended up dumping approximatley 4 gallons of gasoline into my crankcase.
Coincedentally I noticed that a high powered ignition coil can also sound like lifter noise when your head is right next to it. Usually this applies to a 8-9mm wire too. Good luck.
i have an electric fuel pump, makes a noise under the cab so it's not that.
i have the same ignition from Accel that i had before the rebuild.
also a new thing- the truck now sputters and kicks and spits when i shut it down, got worse when i put in 87 octane. this is what a guy calls "dieseling" what is causeing this? could that be related to the tick in any way? it did it once or twice on a hot day with 92 octane, but now seems to do it everytime i shut down. is this a timming problem? it is going in tomorrow morning so well see whats going on, i just don't want to get the run around, i am trying to learn how to fix everything on this truck so i can stop going to places to get it fixed, but i live in an apartment and the landlord said no working on cars in the parking lot.
thanks again for all the help!
hey take a look at my gallary, i just loaded some pics of the truck before i started repairing everything. tell me what you think.
well, took it to the shop this morning. and he said it's the lifters. so the engine builder is going to look at it and figure out what to do. am i wrong to ask them to just replace them all? or are they going to try and be cheap and replace the one or two faulty ones?
I would ask for a new set as long as they are going in there. Get a name brand set from Crane or similar. They aren't that expensive when you are allready in there. Also I'd say you need the 92 octane for your compression or else your timing is to advance. Can you reduce the idle speed?
yea, i brought the idle down a littl and gave it better gas and now it is gone, talking to the engine builder today and going to talk him into new ones, thanks for the help.
ok heres the deal. i took it back to the builder and told him to let it sit overnight there and then go start it, so he did and called me the next day and said he couldn't get it to do it, so i took it back to the shop that put the engine in it and they heard it the morning before and confermed the noise. now they both saying it's gone, so i took it back and i couldn't get it to do it for a few mornings, now it's back. i can get it to do it after it sitting only about 3-5 hours! i am getting kinda frustrated, is it just me or should they have just swaped out the lifters if both the customer and the shop says they heard the problem? i would think that would be customer service but these days that seems to be gone. i have put tons of money into this truck and this is the third engine this builder has done for us. i was hoping the one time i have a problem they would be eager to fix it. i am about to blow up at them and i hate doing that. but my truck has been in the shop for over 2 months and now won't stay out of the shop more that a week since i got it back. from now on i fix my own damn truck! i could have done this engine myself in less tiime if i had a place to do it. sorry i had to kinda rant. but anyone have and helpfull hints for dealing with these guys? i am not mad at the shop that put the engine in, they did a wonderfull job cleaning up the truck and fixing many little things, i just wish the engine shop would take care of their end!

Thats the attitude I expect from any good texan.
Please refrain from using 'damn' and 'truck' in the same sentence.
Hey I am with you there. I don't think I should be paying someone to fix my automobile, thats why I will never own a new vehicle. Good luck.
If I were you I would take the truck to the builder and tell them you want to park it there overnight or for the day. Lock it up and take the keys with you. Go back and have them listen while you start it....You can't kid a kidder!
well it's going back tomorrow afternoon, i wish they would just replace these and get it over with. i am not taking " i can't hear anything" for an anwser, i am almost deaf in one ear and i can defanatly hear it. i am tired of this!
What kind of oil filter are you using? If it's cheap (or a fram) try a NAPA gold/silver , wix or hastings. I've heard of that causing this type of problem. Also It should be changed more often on a new engine to be sure it doesn't clog up with break in debris.
it's a carquest brand. i have used them before without this problem, and i have been changing the oil every 500 miles so far, that why right now i am useing the cheaper brand. so i think that end is covered. i normanly use motorcraft, and napa gold oil filters.
