7500 mile review- 17 F450KR
Got my special order dream truck back in August and just had the first maintenance done at 7500 miles (and the seatbelt recall).
Initial impression that it is supremely comfortable tomdrive on long trips has not changed. I have many 8hr days behind the wheel in it and can’t imagine a better way to travel.
Use: Primarily hauls my Arctic Fox 990 truck camper, but we do use it for trips without the camper as well. She’s been from Crater Lake to SoCal. soCal to AZ, and a 2200 mile loop through GrandCanyon, Monument valley, and New Mexico! With a FULL load of fuel and water in the camper I can max my GVRW. The camper is a titan, but the truck handles it like a dream with just airbags to level it. Plenty of power and brakes.
Issues: we jammed a rock between the duals taking it down into Monument Valley, but extracted it quickly. I lost an inside rear to a puncture a few days later in Santa Fe. No mechanical or electrical issues.
Mpg: can be as high as 19.5 unloaded, but my trips generally end up 11-11.5mpg with the camper. I always start in a hole due to LA traffic as I egress from Socal and slowly bring it up.
Highlights: Although the F350 is truly the max payload model, the 450 turning radius saves my bacon every single day. I would drop a trim level to stay in a 450 if money was tight. It makes that big of a difference to me. Having said that, the KR Ultimate heated and contour massage seats make trips so pleasant. I also ordere the carpet delete and love it. I have full KR fancy carpet floor mats if Desired, and heavy weather rubberfor daily use. Integrated camera system is a homerun for maximizing the urban battlespace. Yeah I could drive it without it, but it makes things easy. I rely on the center high mount because the tailgate is off the truck most of the time. Makes camper loading a breeze.
Options I could pass on: blind spot warning. My wife’s SUV has a great systm that really helps because visibility out of it is poor. That isn’t the case with this truck. I don’t eed or care for it on the SuperDuty. Same for lane departure warning, Not useful.
Regrets? None. For the cost I could have gotten an SRW and fifth wheel and had a better town truck.however, the advantages of the truck and camper have been great. I have parked overnight at a vista point when ca grounds were full or in a family members driveway. I can get out in the woods within reason as well. So far we have 54 nights in this setup and love it. We even used it as a bugout when the Thomas Fire hit here in SoCal.
I added a seven year extended warranty and synthetic maintenance plan. I’m hoping for years of service from the truck and all the great family adventures.

I am planning on a new Arctic Fox for my 450. I will probably go with the 1150 but there is a new 990 with a wet bath available locally. Not sure if I want a wet bath though.
One thing I would like to ask is about rub marks from the camper on the truck. Does the truck clearance the camper everywhere? Do you have to drill any holes for tie downs etc?

The 1150 dry is what my in-laws wanted until they saw the size of my 990 in person. They are big! I think they decided a 990 is plenty. The wet bath is easy to keep tidy. The clearance is tight where it sits between the wheel wells in the bed. I have lines at the base of them were I rubbed it a few times. Careful loading/unloading is key. Nowhere else. I use torklift frame mounts so no drilling on the body. They bolt to the frame.

My camper sits on a bed matt. It clears the cab ok. Any problems with clearance on yours? Did you use anything other than a bed matt?
I drove 800 km on some rough roads home and it didn't hit anywhere.
