Hey everybody, I’m having an issue with the 4R70W in my 94 F150. The issue is, when the trans is at operating temperature, I’m getting a bad shudder during the 1-2 shift, similar to a converter shudder. The trans itself was rebuilt by Ford and only has about 30,000 miles on it. No issues with any other gear, there are no codes, and no issues with converter lockup. There is no material in the pan, always filled with Mercon V. I even installed a new bonded 1-2 accumulator, and swapped the shift solenoids and lockup solenoid and the result was no change. It will not act up at all when it’s cold. I’m about ready to pull it out and go through it and rebuild it, but was wondering if there was anything else I can check. I though about the EPC solenoid, but again, there are no codes. I’d appreciate ANY suggestions
Mine was TPS. It wasn't showing a code, Took it to Ford, they found it with thier scanner.
Replaced the TPS, good as new
So yours was shuddering only when shifting into 2nd gear when warmed up? I put a DVOM on my TPS and didn’t see any dead spots, hot or cold. I would think if it was the TPS, wouldn’t it do it in every gear? The hotter it gets, the less throttle input it takes to make it shudder. Sometimes it won’t do it if you’re going around a turn, oddly enough
Mine never got a chance to act up too much, as it was still under warranty
They did not cover the TPS, only told me that is what it was
I changed it out because my warranty was getting close to the end, and didn't want to argue later with them. Once changed, the problem went away
Well that wasn’t it. I replaced the TPS with a new Motorcraft part, and the problem remains. There is a what I believe to be excessive play at the output shaft/yoke, but no seal leak. I wouldn’t think that would be a source of a 1-2 shift shudder, only when hot
UPDATE; picked up a kit and pulled the trans apart. The center support bearing that had gone bad about 6 months ago, ended up wiping out the output shaft bushing, which caused the failure of the intermediate clutch due to lateral play of the output shaft. It’s all put back together and back in the truck. I also added some P71 accumulator springs, and it shifts like a brand new truck
