Ford Hi output alternators

LAST EDITED ON 17-Oct-01 AT 06:49 PM (EST)[p]I burned my stock alt up the other day while working on my snowplow...I wanted something with amperage to put on, but it looks like 100 amps is as high as I can go...the parts house don't go much higherthan 75 and my local rebuilder said 100 was as high as he could go...he said it was due to the internal regulator...they have been known to burn trucks to the ground if they put to much out...he also suggested putting as big of battery possible in there to help with the load....

He said if it had the external he could go as high as I needed....

Is there a way to swap the internal regulated alternator with an externally regulated one? I know there would be a lot of screwing around with the wiring and mounting, so I'm not sure if I want to go that route....

Or, is there another place I can that sells hi-outputs?

This is for an '89 F250 4x4 with a 300 I-6...

Thanks!
phil

Dustin's site on a mustang alt on a Bronco v-8..some great hints here!

Also, try your auto electric shop, they might be able to rebuild it to increase output and upgrade bearings, diodes, etc.

Toecutter, Did I read about you on the "Snowplow forums"? There was someone on that website that toasted his alt while trying to figure his Western plow control cable problem. Very similar story. I use the hottest stock alt on my 92' F-250 right now. I believe it was around 95 amps. It was the hottest for my truck that NAPA had at the time. I had no choice at the time to research it. Had more snow to plow.
I believe that it wasn't too expensive when I made the purchase. Less than $100.00.
Good luck. Jake.

I have heard of guys getting a alternator off of a farm tractor that will fit. If you can find one that is, that puts out what you need. They saved alot of money going to the local John Deere or Case-IH dealer than buying a race alternator.

I wanted to put in a HO Alternator in my truck too and found that the F250HD-F350 for mid-90s came with a 130Amp alternator. I got a hold of one and it bolted right into my 95 F150 5.0. The electrical connections were the same as well. Took 5 minutes to swap in.

I do have a guy down in Rockford, IL that rebuilds alternators, and he's very reasonable...He does put some up on Ebay for auctions...I bought a 100 amp for my Bronco last fall from him, never had a problem with the alt, although it still wasn't enough to compensate for the plow...

His email address is zbeav(No Email Addresses In Posts!) if anyone is interested....

Thanks guys.

I was just looking at my 95 Ford specs book and it shows a 215 amp generator (alternator) that was made for the F-series and Econoline. You might want to check that out as an alternative. Good luck, Ben

It's goofy...I got a 100 amp alt today, no way it was going to work...went to another yard, the 75 amp they had(I need something for just now) was out of a 94 Bronco...no good, wouldn't fit. I'm gonna try a 130 amp out that I'm getting from that guy I posted about earlier. Otherwise, that looks like as high as I can go for this truck, unless I shell out 3-400 bucks for some super modified alt that I have to super modify my truck for...
