Passenger Door

Had a peculiar thing happen yesterday with the truck ('17 F350 Plat). Went outside in the morning to get something out of the truck and the passenger-side door seemed to be stuck a little (temp was 7 degree's out yesterday morning). Second pull on the handle and the door opened right up. Got what I was looking for and went to shut the door...no luck. The door would not shut. Fiddled with the latch and found it was inoperative. Bungee'd the door from the inside as I had to head to the dealer today to drop it off. I put the truck in the garage overnight due to a possibility of inclement weather.

Got to the dealership and was demonstrating the problem to the service manager. Disconnected the bungee cord and closed the door...fully expecting it not to latch...and the darn thing worked perfectly! The service manager recommended having his guys take a look at it anyway, so I let them do that. They could find nothing wrong, so I went back home.

They were just as perplexed as I was, so I'm asking you folks....any ideas what could have caused the issue?

Tim

Same thing here, I started a thread on it earlier. I told my dealer about the known problem, he thought it only affected F150's, couldn't find anything re-lubed it and that night same problem, door latch wouldn't engage. When I called back and discussed it with them they did say there was a problem with some of the super duties with chrome handless. Not sure if yours does anyway mine does and it is going back in next week. I really should have taken it in this week as a great part of the time I had either not been able to open the door at all, or after it had been open not being able to close it. This week it has been cold so I just left it parked and took another truck.

Mine has just started exhibiting the same problem, three times this week. Passenger door only. A couple of tries and hard closing and it will latch. Haven’t called the dealer because of the holidays. Tomorrow I will call and post any results of the complaint. This seems to be getting way too common, especially considering it’s the passenger door only.

My truck does the same thing. No chrome door handles on mine. Passenger side only.
I looked up the recall and supposedly my truck is not affected. Hope somebody figures it out soon. I plan on getting it to the dealer soon but I'm afraid I'll get the same results as the OP...

17 F250 Platinum. Same issue, all of the doors. Goes aways with warmer temps or letting the truck run with the heater on blast. Would love a fix up here in Alaska..

My appointment is for Monday, I’ll post after I get it back. FYI, my truck was built at the Kentucky plant 9 days after the door latch recall window closed.

Thanks guys! Same thing happened again this morning. Took it back up to Ford and the service manager confirmed that, "Yup...sure won't close!". He called his "expert door guy" out to take a look and what a disappointment he was. He said, and I quote..."Yeah...it happens when it gets really cold out...nothing we can do about it". I asked the "expert" if he had seen the TSB about it and he said he had not. I turned to the service manager and said he needed to re-evaluate what his definition of an expert was.

I got home and sent the TSB to the service manager via email, so I will wait to see what happens.

My drivers door exhibits it once in a while when cold. My symptoms are it won't close. It will latch partially but not fully. I open it again and "pop" the handle and it will latch fully. Called the dealer and there is a campaign but no fix yet. Interesting.

Same here, drivers door won't unlock with the fob or keypad. I have to go through the passenger door. Then once it is open, it won't latch closed. Painted door handles on mine.

I just returned from my second appointment and made a third to have the door latches replaced. In my situation I took it in once, they re-greased it. It hen happened again a few times actually. There has been lots of problems with the f150’s less with super duties (they share the same cab so I don’t find that too surprising myself but it took a bit for the dealer to) anyway 3rd times a charm they are replacing the hinges on the passenger doors. They may do the drivers as well. Parts are in and I am dropping it off today. I’ll keep you posted.

Isnt it a shame you have to go to the service dept with TSB’s in hand to get your truck fixed...I wonder where they get some of these people. Did the same thing on my last truck, they performed the TSB and got it fixed. Took me all of 5 minutes on google to figure out but they have much more info than I do, dont know if its laziness or just dont care...rant over.

That's almost more frustrating to me than the repair. In this case it is a well known issue but I am not getting the feeling that "this is a problem we need to look into it and get to the bottom of "more like "this is normal behavior you shouldn't be so particular" It has happened a number of times now where the door latch hasn't engaged and the passenger has to hold the door shut while driving, not safe wouldn't you say? The other doors freeze up and you can't event access the truck. It's taken me three trips to get to the point where they have agreed it is a real issue and got the parts in to fix it.

Seems like a stupid dealer. Has anyone just tried silicone spray lube on the latch assembly. Worked on our trucks.

I'm also getting a bit sick and tired of having to print out TSB's and take them to the dealer whenever I have an issue. Dealers should be more familiar with these trucks than us jabronies on the net.

Yes I tried Spraying the latch before I ever took it in for service thinking that would keep the moisture away but then it happened again right away. The fix they have come up with is to install a water shield to keep moisture out and/or replacing the actuation cable. It has affected over a million vehicles so I am not sure why it was a surprise for my dealer although it has been happening more to F150's. What mine has been doing is either closing but then unlatching to sort of a half opening or just not latching at all. Once the cab warms up it will usually latch but then freeze up again once it sits.
