I filled mine at the diesel pump station from the DEF pump. This is my first diesel and refueling was quite an awakening. I could never have imagined how nasty everything is. The first pump I ever used had a pool of black diesel on the ground and the nozzle was dripping with fuel. The DEF pump was all encrusted with crystals too. I keep a box of disposable nitrile gloves under the back seat and always put at least one on before I open the fuel door.
Anyway, the bulk dispenser is likely to be the least expensive method and since it is being pumped will be the fastest method. You'll want to be careful that it doesn't fill too quickly and back splash on your paint, since it is corrosive. Also worth noting is that in freezing temperatures you don't want to over fill. It needs room to expand if/when it freezes. Otherwise it can crack the tank.
If you buy the box, you can wash and save the spout. I'm not sure why, since the bulk nozzle fits way down inside the filler spout as is.

So my last cold trip empty which was 1500 Km, almost a 1000 miles, I saw one verified regen at the beginning, then DOF stayed at 0% soot until got there and short trips, same for return trip. This was all in cold weather, below 10 f.

On the same trip each way, 5 hours of driving and varied speeds but mostly 70 mph, next to no DEF was used. Empty again.

In comparison this summer, different road due to fires, but towing and loaded, 8500 lb trailer, and box had about 1000 lbs. I burned a bit more than 6 gallons of DEF, in two 1500 km return trips. Summer temps in the higher than 90 degrees f, as high as 100 f.

This is to give you an idea of the two systems, I did not have the ability to read exhaust temps, but these two trips are comparible in terms of load difference, and outside temps, and in both cases DPF% never increased over the whole trips, only when idling or short trips did soot go up.

I don't think you really have much wrong, the DEF tank only has a few liquid sensors, so it seems very delayed in resoonding especially when topped up really full, to overrun. My first oil change I only burned 3/8th of a tank of DEF in 8000 km, my second, I burned the above 6 gallons about, before oil change and they fill it, I am at 4000 km from fill and have used less than a 1/4 tank, because it's winter, no towing, I will likely use the same 3/8th. Though I do have a long trip coming up which might burn a bit more than the first oil change.

I noticed WalMart sells the Blue Peak DEF in a box and some house brand without a box. The house brand being quite a bit less expensive than the name brand. I almost got a jug of the no-name stuff, but didn't because I'm always hesitant to buy no-name when I don't really know what I'm buying.
Which do you buy?

wrvond, thought you said you filled at the pump. or do you buy at walmart. i'd like to fill at the pump myself, it was 2.80/gal vs almost 5.00/gal at wallys. just want to make sure it's the right stuff. very nice truck btw. i have a friend with one that color. i'm not a red guy, but that ruby is really classy.

Have done DEF refill via jug at a dealership, and a couple at Pacific Pride that I did at the pump. A jug at the dealership was about $18.00 and they did the dirty deed but they also kept the jug and spout. It was $2.69 per gallon at PacPride and very simple to do after the first time. At the pump for me whenever possible from now on.

I bought the house brand after reading the ingredients between the two. Both had the same exact recipe.

I use the cheap stuff at Wal-Mart. Regarding the gauge not moving, it takes about 1000 miles to use a gallon. If the DEF tank is full, the gauge doesn't move at all for many miles. I think I go well over 1000 miles before the gauge moves. "Full" seems to be 6 gallons to 7.5 gallons.

Mine is the opposite. Used 1/2 tank hauling a 13000 lbs load 525 miles. Hardly uses it unloaded. 2017 F350

Thanks, I'm not normally a red vehicle kind of guy either, but this truck reached out and grabbed me when I happened on it.
So far I've only used bulk fill at the pump. But I've often thought of buying a jug at WalMart to have with me "just in case". Of course, in the freezing temperatures we've enjoyed lately, storage while on the road is a real issue.
I paid $2.899 per gallon at a BP station in Fon Du Lac, WI. probably about average.

Remember Urea doesn't have a long shelf life - you'll probably age it out before you ever need it.

DEF shelf life is one year, assuming it is stored reasonably. I buy one as soon as I empty the prior one.

6500 kilometers? That's like 27 real people miles, right? LOL.

My first DEF fill was at about 9600km (converted for your convenience~) and I put in just over 22.8 liters (about 6 gallons). The DEF tank in my 2017 CCSB is about 28 liters (7.4 gallons). I get my DEF @ the pump.

Most of my travels have been unloaded highway.

EGT is what makes you go into regen, when running highway speed turning optimal RPM you won’t use much. When you ride around in hauling nothing you use more to offset the emissions from sulfur I believe. My semis do the same thing, pyrometers are the only way to monitor where the engine is at on exhaust temperature.Thats why you should order the truck with the proper gears for its intended service use. I posted something awhile back about a peterbuit we had that would go into regen constantly and my mechanic wrapped the exhaust to keep the temperature up and it cured it. Idling is no dice on the newer trucks that’s when they plug up and suck def fluid, should only idle to bring down coolant after a hard pull.
