769 miles oil change?

Oh, yes and that is why I changed at 5K. I didn't worry about it for under 200 mile towing trips, but changed prior to a cross country trip. I take my 5W40 to the dealer and had no problem until, while on the road, stopped at a dealer in Richmond, VA who refused to use it, but had only MC 10W30. So I went across the street to Midas.

I just changed my air filter. Change it every 20,000 or so miles. An FTE member some time back said that this is a total waste of money to change prior to the indicator saying it's full. Dealer said to change it at my last oil change, and when I got home, I did. FTE member is likely right though.
My truck had been more of a city truck but now sees lots of long, empty freeway miles. I have slowly moved to more of a 7,000 mile mindset with my freeway time. Your truck, do some research and do what you like.

You were going to change your oil at 769 miles, correct? I'll assume your truck is new. What do you have? Just curious....
I used to use the Mobil 1's, K&N's and also Purolators on my other vehicles.
But having a vehicle on warranty and after looking into the MotorCraft oil filter, It's a good filter. But like poison, to each his own.

Ford puts a "break in " oil in the new engines. I'm all for leaving that in for a while. Yes, I used to change the oil at 1,000 miles on new cars. But that is just not needed with these modern engines. I'm now in the first change at 5,000 miles belief.
Same goes for the 3,000 or 5,000 mile change interval. I sent off a bunch of Oil samples at 5,000 then 6,000 and 7,000. They all came back Oil Good. So I just settled on changing whenever my Oil life minder tells me a change is needed. Which is about every 7,500 miles.
Once on the road in North Dakota, I pulled into a Walmart and had them change my oil, Ford Dealer was 5 days backed up and -30°. I needed the oil changed today and not next week and I didn't want to lay in a parking lot at -30° to do it myself. They put in 15 qts. I called them on it and they rolled truck back into the bay and drained it and put the recommended 13 qts in. That oil had been in the truck 5 minutes idling while I was paying the bill. When it drained out, It was BLACK. So I'm not surprised that your oil was black at 990 miles. It's just the nature of modern diesel. The oil has to carry soot.
I was surprised to see a friend on FB announce that her new Dodge has a 10,000 mile recommended oil change interval. But I remembered that when the 6.7L first came out, Ford engineer frequented one of the Forums and said their testing of the 6.7L showed it could go 10,000 and 12,000 miles between oil changes. But they set the Oil Life at around 7500 to be safe.
It's your money, Do what you are comfortable with. But there are options to test and learn just how long modern oil will last.

The factory fill is straight 10w30 motor craft. No break in oil...

Haven’t done any reading in there ... lol... but I would assume they are referring to oil used during the break in process. However, the motor is broken in before it leaves ktp so not sure why they would mention it...

Having just breezed through those 500+ pages, I can't even tell you where I read it. But I did see those words used.
It's not a big issue. I still think the original oil can go more than 1000 miles. The tolerances are so tight on these new CGI engines, That there is not a lot of metal shavings floating around in the first oil fill.

Something else to consider, if the oil from the factory required changing prior to the IOLM notification it would be posted in the owners manual to do so.
FWIW I changed my factory oil at 5000 miles, pulled a sample and sent if off to blackstone, That report is posted here on FTE.
I also hooked a 7000lb trailer to my truck with 50 miles on the clock the day after I purchased it even though the owners manual recommends not doing so until the 500 mile mark.
