I am getting ready to replace my cracked manifolds on my 87 HO 351 2wd f150. I am planning on full length stainless headers. I want to run the drivers side over to the pass side and run the pair parralell down the pass side. I am looking at a kit on summit dynomax 89016. Has anyone else done a diy system like this and if so what kit did you use. There will be plenty of fab here and I'm just wanting to get enough bends and what not to accomplish the task with out an exh shop.
i also was looking at a kit that summit sells for a brand x universal kit i thought would work to do what I want. I'm not going to an exh shop and dropping 600$ on a system for a 100$ truck.I have a bassani x section and a cherry bomb 2in,2out muffler that will work perfectly and go down that passenger side nicely. This is a low buck DD project lol.
The only experience I have with universal exhaust kits is not really a good one. My honest opinion is to take the components that you want to use: headers, muffler, tip etc and have a shop make the pipes. Ideally it would be great to make friends with someone in your area that has a nice pipe bender and a welder. I would ask for an estimate before deciding against having a shop make you piping. I know that isn't the advice you were after.
I wish I could get a shop to do it with my components. Sadly every shop I know of won't install customer supplied parts. I have a welder and a lift but no pipe machine is my hold back. If I had a pipe bender I could build it myself no problem. I found that kit is only 2 1/4". I'm not sure what I'm going to do now.
Dual 2.25" is plenty if you do an x pipe in the system.
Engine masters did a video showing 2.5 is good to 600hp.( on a system 25 feet long) So at I'd think 2.25 would be good to at least 450-475...and that's far more than a 351 with stock heads is going to make.

I too saw that and agree. My issue is the x and the muffler are 2 1/2" and I would rather keep the system uniform. I have found a system jegs sells for an "a" body chrysler that is 2 1/2" and 179$ . I believe it has enough bends to get the job done
Not sure how much this helps but had my buddy built me a 2.5 y pipe off my pacesetter longtubes. Goes over the trans cross member and it connects by the output shaft. I don't remember what bends and stuff he bought.
