Hi all, I hope some one can help, the light for the overdrive off button continues to flash. I had this problem about a month or so ago, it lasted about two days and went off when I used the washer for the windsheild (odd),and it has returned. the truck is a 1994 f-350 crew cab turbo diesel please help!!!!
had a simular problem on a 94 e150. started while coming back from the mountains, but it blew a timing chain before we figured anything out, cept we also were told it was the tranny getting hot
The light will flash in response to the tranny thinking it is slipping. Several causes may occur, but in general get ready for a $3000 replacement. eBay has the cheapest units, about $950 w/o shipping and labor should bee $350-500. If an E4OD, replace the cooler with the biggest you can find. First lasted 100k, second w/cooler went 212K.
hutchfam7,
As stated above, the flashing OD light is the computer's way of telling you it's finding something wrong with it's ability to shift the transmission.
You need to take the vehicle to an auto parts store, trans. shop, or dealership to get the codes drawn so you can know what the computer finds wrong with it's abililty to shift OR you can go to Walmart or an auto parts store and buy a code reader for around $25 and draw the codes yourself. The reader usually includes a booklet which identifies what the codes mean.
Sounds to me as if it's a rather minor problem as you haven't said you notice any shifting problems, new sounds, new smells.
If, and when you get the codes drawn from the computer and are able to decipher what they are regarding, write me at:
and I will send you a zip file of E4OD documentation which includes test procedures for the sensors ( they give the computer it's needed parameters to initiate a shift), hard part upgrades to consider for a rebuild, diagrams, and pictures.
ours had shifting problems, it would vibrate harshly, and when you took your foot out of it, it would shift, the vibrations where harsh enough that after a while it the tranny mount nuts loosened and fell off! but while were on the subject of e4ods messing up, we currently have one in a van behind a 351w that while driving down the road it seems as if the converter is locking and unlocking, its the same as right before the tranny kicks down and the converter unlocks. the tranny also slips when it shifts the rpms rise and then it enguages ands goes, but it has only done this since we burned up a voltage regulator, which buy the way, blew about 4 fuses. does this mean that a chip in the computor burned up?
muscletruck,
No, if you're computer had been damaged your tranny would be left in "limp mode", i.e. if you put the shift lever in drive, you'd start in 4rth gear and 2nd would be second gear. I had to use limp mode once while I shopped around for a new solenoid block harness connector.
The locking/unlocking problem sounds like a sensor. I don't know what year van your talking about so I can't specify which sensor. Could be either RPM sensor or VSS (vehicle speed sensor).
Write me at the above email address and put E4OD in the subject line so I don't accidentally delete it as spam, and I will send you the previously mentioned E4OD zip file.
Incidentally, this whole thread would be much better off in the "Transmission, Differential, Axle, and Transfer Case" forum in the MISC. section. Lot of good heads in that forum. R.A.
Hi all and thank you!!!! I will take in this week to have it read and see what code comes up. I did have a little spare time today and disconnected the battery cables and that got the light to quit blinking and I did notice that it seems to shift smoother, although I didn't notice that it was real rough before when the light was blinking but i bet it was. I still want to have it checked out and will let you all know!! thanks again. dieselzen I will let you know what the code is when I find out, thank you!!!!!
Had the same problem after buying my F250 7.3l IDI turbo. Got codes cleared a couple times (you did the same by disconnecting battery & reconnecting it), but problem kept returning. Turned out to be a very weak torque converter. If I hadn't had it replaced ($900.00), the whole transmission would have blown. Don't mess with it --- get it to a good transmission shop asap.
My shifter light came on a few months ago. Took it to the Ford dealer. They told me the shift solenoids were bad. So i bought the parts. In the mean time I'm driving the truck and the tranny is shifting fine. So i hooked up my code reader and got a code that said the torque converter clutch was slipping, which made sense cause the light would come on when it down shifted out of over drive while pulling my trailer.
That was 3 months ago and the shifter light has not come on since. However, I don't tow in OD any more unless it's cool out and the terrain is flat. 165000 miles, going for 200000
