I had the same problem with my 1993 F350 at about 90,000. If you have your codes checked it will probably come up as a code 62. It means the computer thinks that the torque converter is slipping. You can clear it for awhile by disconnecting the battery cables but it will just keep coming back. The real fix is a trans. overhaul at about $2400.00 bucks. Good luck.

When you have the code read, you need the light to be blinking. I had same problem, but it would reset itself when you shut it off most of the time. Tech's couldn't find a fault code until I brought it in with the motor running and the light flashing.

New torque converter and solenoids bought me 900 miles until warranty was up. Then I had to cough up 2400$ for a rebuild. Cottman put in three torque converters and a new valve body before they figured out that the computer was messing up causing the torque converter to fry and fill the tranny with filings, which plugged the solenoids and valve body frying the clutches. The last time it was fixed I went to ford for a new computer. $1200 + 300 labor = Traded for Toyota Tacoma the next day. 30,000 miles later I'm a happy Toyota owner. I will never own another ford automatic until I'm too old to enjoy shifting a manual tranny again.

Unless it's a C-6. At least those I can rebuild myself and don't have to have a computer to diagnose it when it gets sick.

Good luck and don't waste time. Once these things start to slip it adds money to the bill for every mile you drive it. God help you if you ruin the case.

Tranny Problems

Guys,

I agree, it could be any of the above; however we resolved it all on my dads 92 - 7.3l IDI by replacing the Engine Speed Sensor which was going wacky and ended up confusing the transmission computer at times. Disconnecting the battery terminals would reset the computer until the next time the tach sensor went wacky. By replacing the engine tach sensor and having it provide a proper engine speed signal to the tranny computer it solved all the tranny problems.

The shop my Dad took the truck to used to get all sorts of weird codes from the computer so reading the codes may not tell you anything useful.

A quick check would be to see if have noted your manual tachometer going funny at times, it works of the same tach sending unit.

Just a thought before you send big mulla on a tranny rebuilt that may not solve your problems.

Engine Speed Sensor

The tranny computer uses a signal from the engine tach sending unit for shifting gears. When the tachometer signal output from the engine tack sensor goes bad then the tranny computer gets all confused and you get the blinky light on the shift lever telling you something is wrong with the tranny. Unfortunately the only thing wrong with the tranny is that it doesn't know how to shift because the computer is not getting the right engine speed signal. Note, a standard code reading on the tranny computer will not tell you the engine tach sending unit is bad.

Seeing that you engine tachometer in your instrument panel (which is also driven of the same tach sending unit located near the engine oil filler cap) is going funny is a good indication that it is the root cause of all your tranny problems. The tach sensor is not very expensive and an easy thing to change. To reset the tranny computer after you have changed the engine tach sensor, just disconnect your battery cables (both batteries) for 5 minutes and reconnect.

Hope it works out for you, nobody likes to spent money on expensive tranny rebuilts, especially if it will not solve your problems in the first place.

But since it's your speedometer that's jumping around it's most likely your VSS, Vehicle Speed Sensor. A rather cheap and easy fix.

Cool

PS, I hate the E4OD, I agree with a previous post about not owning another Ford automatic unless it's a C-6.

Good point, Jboard did say speedometer, so in that case it probably is the VSS. Never had problems with the VSS, it has always been the Engine Tach sending unit for me.

Yeah, I had to replace my VSS not too long ago, speedo jumping all over and wild shifts while it was doing it. New one was only about $25 and less then 5 minutes to replace it. Fixed that problem, shortly after going through the TPS thing, and a month or so later I have new problems, no OD, code 62, blah, blah, blah. Can't figure it out, it's going to have to go in for an estimate. So meanwhile this 'nice' truck stays parked while my '69 becomes my daily driver.
Funny thing is with all the different problems I've had with this tranny the OD has never blinked and the light does work.
