I was talking to a buddy of mine the other day and he wants to change the bed out on his 78 F150 4x4. It's a regular cab longbed, he said something about a "Camper Special" bed. I guess those beds had built on tool boxes...correct me if I am wrong. Any way would he be able to put one of these beds with the built in toolbox on his truck, is there any difference in the location of the wheel wells?
Any bed will fit except one from a Super Camper Special. Its bed length is the same but the axle is 7" farther back and has spare tire holder built in the right side of bed.
That was only available on F350's and they only built about 3000 of them.
They had an amazing set of springs, very strong, came only in 4x2 and had a 460 2 bbl. I don't recall if a manual transmission was available or not.
They built the Super Camper Special from '73-'79. In 77 1/2 /'78 they dropped the "Super". It was mainly a special order truck. It consisted basically of the heaviest springs and shocks avalible, 140" wheel base, dual batteries w/ isolator, camper plug in, and a special lockable spare tire carrier hidden behind a panel in front of the passenger side wheel well. My dad ordered one brand new in '73 it was/is an awesome truck, he still has it. It is a Ranger XLT, (was) 390 auto (the manual tranny was avalible). It now has a 460 C6.
I forgot to add it was an F350 only option.

I saw a few of those Super Camper Specials. Those are awesome trucks, I like how the axle is farther back to distribute the load. There was one for sale here a couple years ago, too bad - it was a little beat up.
I would love to see the one we have back on the road. it really is a sweet looking truck.
It needs a new motor, tranny, and rear end, driveshaft, entire D70 axle.
I saw one on Thursday. Guy had big tires on the back and small ones on the front. The stance was just awesome - especially with the 1-ton suspension...
i have a 1978 f-350 super camper speical, has a utility bed on it
though, and there is a 7 inch gap between cab and bed, i'm looking for the 140 inch wheel base bed for it. it has the 351/400
motor 8900 gvw dana 70 rear with 4.10 gear ratio custom cab.
in the procress of restoring with only 9k miles origional (used to
be fire truck (mini pumper) in arkansas...
