The semi floating rear axle? I had one of those myself but I swapped in a Sterling to replace it. They were available on lighter duty F250s up through at least the late 80s or early 90s.
Yeah, same as the "7700" version F150 with a Sterling 9.75 semi-floater.
I never understood semifloating axles on ANY "3/4 ton" pickup because honestly, what's the point? I simply was baffled by an 8.8" 8-lug rear axle.....never saw one before this.
Maybe it's a heavy half? Nevermind you said it's an F250....
I wonder what kind of brakes it has?
All of the semi floater F250s I've seen use narrower 2 1/2" wide shoes while the full floaters had 3" shoes. Otherwise the rest of the brake parts are identical.

I believe it's for people who don't want to spend the money on a full fledge 3/4 ton pickup. People overload 1/2 ton pickups all the time, these "transition" pickups at least let you run the higher load rated 16 inch tires. People like choices, and this would be another choice for them.
My 1980 F250 SCab had a similar axle. Had a 351M/4 speed combo.
Are those Dodge wheels? I had an 03 F250 with similar looking wheels. And my 2011 F150 has the 7 lug wheels mentioned earlier. Heavy duty payload package.
