I need to get a new exhaust.(no patching this baby) If I could cough up the extra bones would now be a good time to add headers? Another way of asking this... is after market header on a 86 f150 302 EFI worth the extra cash? Does it mess with the system? Also this has single exhaust, would it be in my best interests to go to duel. Cosmetic isn't worth the extra money for me, but performance is... if its within reason.
There are no performance gains for duals over an equally well built single system so save your money. You will see no gains at all by just changing the tailpipe, while headers definitely produce gains but must be combined with an aftermarket cat or catless Y pipe to realize those gains. And none of this will have any effect on the engine as long as an O2 sensor is installed in the exhaust near the original location.
While I will agree headers will give some gains, you have to balance this with the aggravation they cause in day to day use and maintenance. I have used long tube headers and cannot recommend them because of the above fitment and maintenance problems they cause. I have never run shorty headers, they could possibly be better since they use the stock y-pipe. I would still investigate sparkplug and sparkplug wire clearance though.
Duals are very difficult to run on these trucks because of the front gas tank location.
