Changing things just to change them or to "make a name for yourself" or "make your mark" is very bad in the military, at least in the USAF. It was a struggle that I had to deal with on regular basis and was very good in speaking my mind about when I made the grade that I knew I was going to retire at.

I used to have an old SNCO over me before I was a SNCO and he would say "tell me your concerns and let me voice them because I am secure in my retirement, you are not". So, when I became a SNCO and was happy with my progression, I took on the same roll as speaking for those that should not speak and voice our opinions. Sometimes we were told to shut up and color, and other times we were commended for taking action to change something.
