hows it going had a 7.3 was awesome while it lasted plowed like crazy tons of power 2003 im looking at a 2002 f250 6 litre to take its place or a 2006 f250 5.4 gas.. any suggestions. i like the gas because cheaper i think to maintain but like diesel any feedeback on whats a better truck to plow and salt with.
They didn't make the 6.0 until 2003. A 6.0 powerstroke is known for having some issues like egr, oil cooler, ficm, hpop, and head gasket failure. However If you are willing to put 5-6K in them to make them reliable then they can be good engines.
I would get the good one as it will be cheaper to maintain than replace in the long run.
OK, seriously... Plow truck? Get the heaviest one you can find and put a bunch of weight in the bed. Some engines weigh more than others, but the engine is not my first concern. Traction is.
With any diesel you would like to buy I would tell you to take it to a Ford dealer and have them test the engine with IDS and look it over before you buy it. Have them check boost, injectors, compression FICM etc.
Diesel can be great truck but if you get one that someone hasnt maintained or is a problem child it could lead to thousands in repairs. It might cost you a few hundred to get it inspected but getting that engine inspected and tested could save you thousands down the road
If you had a 7.3 and were satisfied with it, why not consider another 7.3? For a plow truck, I'd also look one with a manual transmission to avoid costly auto transmission rebuilds. Between the 5.4 and 6.0, I'd go with the 5.4, especially since it's just gonna be a plow truck. Now if you were towing long distances and/or heavy, the 6.0 would probably be better.
have you considered looking for a F250 OR F350 with the v10 gas engine or even a used 6.2 V8? Both of those would do the job on plowing and would be cheaper to maintain then a diesel. You can find a 6.0 but make sure to have that engine look over and tested by Ford with their IDS, last thing you want to do spend thousands to buy it and then have to spend thousands more to fix it or get it running properly
