A decision

So for the last few weeks I've been looking at trucks, I need one.. I sold my 7.3 about a year ago and have been kicking myself since.. But that neither here nor there. I Have narrowed it down to either a 2004 F-350 6.0 Diesel with 128,000 which has a new EGR, oil cooler, the dealer put about 10k into it 2 years ago selling for around $13k.. and a 2004 F-250 Gas 5.4 with about 47k miles for around the same price.. Now in this case I love diesel, but is it worth the fuel cost to go gas, or the low mileage a big enough difference to make the gas truck the better decision. Any advice is greatly appreciated I need a truck asap

The lower mileage truck would most likely no need front suspension work yet as some have had to replace ball joints and wheel bearings by 128k. My 05 went 173k before I has to do the front end bits. If you need the grunt go with the diesel. If you can live with a marginally powered truck and don't have a need to tow heavy get the gasser. Both can be good trucks. I spent about 22-2400 rebuilding my front suspension mostly OE parts. Just something to think about.

I had a 2000 or 2001 f250 5.4L traded it for the 06 6.0. With the gears it had I couldn't afford the gas lol. Course it had high 200k+ miles on it.
If the dealer spent 10k on the one you're looking at they did alot more than egr and cooler replace. I'll never own another gasser again if I can help it. Full disclosure--regular maintenance cost will go up but it's worth it IMO

Thats what I'm figuring, they did alot of work in addition to the two I mentioned they did an exhaust and an air intake, rebuilt turbo.. I need to sometimes pull stuff and plow and I figured the diesel would be better on fuel cost.. Has it been a noticeable difference from gas to diesel..

Thanks for the input

The F-250 with the 5.4L is a gutless wonder and would really only be useful as a grocery getter or for trips to the hardware store. Now if you are going to go for the diesel I would shoot for an 05'-07' just for the more reliable HPOP.

Plus:

Better grille
Better front suspension
Better Interior
Better Turbo

What Bullitt and Mustang said.
And yes I see a big difference in fuel.
Mine had 4:10 gears or something like that and I would get 10mpg and 13 if lucky. Basically my fuel savings is paying the payment on this truck.
These trucks are my daily drivers and I drive to work ~50 miles a day (total) and went from 400 bucks a month in gas to ~200 bucks a month in diesel (not including fishing time and running around) so it was a big savings.
I'll never own another gasser again if I can help it
PS:full disclosure--maintenance cost will go up but to me it's worth it.

I've heard that tune hundreds of times. I haven't stopped singing it either, since I sold my 2000 7.3 about 5 years ago. Now they are either far too worn out or too desirable (ergo high priced) to grab another one.

Anyway, you never said what you do with your truck. Hard to advise with no info. Need to know if you like to mall crawl, go offroad, tow heavy, like lots of low end power, the ability to add gobs of power, and if you can work on your own junk. Answer those questions and you'll have your answer.

I Sometimes tow heavy.. I'm a landscaper occasionally a bobcat, or a dump trailer.. I ended up putting a deposit on the diesel..
