1985 Bronco 351w Starting Problems

I have a 1985 Bronco with a 351w. I have replaced the started close to 10 times and have replaced the fly wheel. Nothing has worked to consistently start the truck. The starter will disengage and just spin free. I’ve shimmed it and rigged it up in the past to engage but it doesn’t last. There are a slew of other issues with the engine but the starter is the biggest issue. I am currently trying to decide if it would be a better use of time/money to fix the current engine or buy a crate engine.

so the Bendix is going bad or the starter wont engage the flywheel. if oil gets on the starter shaft it will keep the Bendix from engaging the flywheel. this is especially true in a cold climate.

Maybe a dumb question...what is the bendix and where is it located?

It's the part that has the gear that goes into the flywheel.

It's located under the lumpy cover on the starter.

Do you have the correct starter for your application? Manual and automatics have a different snout on them. One is longer than the other.
