I was wondering.. Has anyone ever hooked jumper cables up backwards? Every time I've given someone a boost, in the back of my head, I've wondered what might happen.
The battery will explode into 8,336 pieces that are evenly distributed to the ground, thus creating an acid-born fissure in the Earth's crust, thus bringing about a new Volcano, thus killing you, thus creating the oncoming Apocolypse!
WHAT?! It sounded good right? ('cept for the whole dying, apocolyptic part...)
This will generally take out the main fusible link for the charging system.
In vehicles protected by a fusible link, said fuse is cleverly camoflaged to appear to be nothing but another length of wire with a connector at each end...
@#$%!@#%#$$!@#%!!!!!!
Oh - pardon me. That was something that took me a day or so to figure out....
acerockola77 may have not had an opportunity to do any moronic activities yet but I'm sure his time will come. I, on the other hand, have had quite a few opportunities over the years, one of which involved jumping from a 12v to a 6v battery - BIG mistake. The entire top of the battery blew off (acid and battery case pieces all over the inside of the VW beetle). However, after regaining my senses and most of my hearing, I noted that the cables were still connected to the limp and flacid battery posts so I thought, what the heck, and turned the key. That little baby turned over like never before and started right up. So if you can't find your battery charger sometime...

Well, trust me i've had many moronic activities, but I dont think i've ever tried that one I have desentagrated a few pairs of shoes before from battery acid.
Yep, Been there, done that. I also hooked a battery up backwards to a small transistor radio years ago. I turned it on and I could hear this real low hiss. I brought the radio up to my ear so I could hear better and that's when the capacitor blew up.
It just shut both vehicles down when I did it. And yes, sulfuric acid is some nasty stuff. I had a 79 mustang, and had just bought a new battery. Put the battery in and changed plugs and wires at the same time. I crunk her up, and was giving her some throttle, and my new battery slid over and got ate up by the alternator fan. Battery acid everywhere, most of it on me. I got lucky that day and it all missed my eyes, but did get up my nose. I musta looked funny with a water hose up my nose!
When I did I put the the cable on the body of the truck and the other on the wrong terminal and I just melted my ground wire. Nothin major but it did motivate me to get a new battery and new wiring.
I have seen people do it and get sparks and then I have seen em blow up in there faces. not the wisest things to play I wear saftey glasses every time I touch a battery.
My brother hooked it up backwards on my 66 when I was jumping it from my 90 GMC
It didnt do anything but get really hot and didnt blow a fuse, but I noticed it really fast
At the old shop one of our guys did that, hooked up the charger to a battery backward. We always kept baking soda on hand afterward. He was lucky - when the acid hit his face most of it went on his beard and mustache (he said that's why he didn't shave, it protected his face).
