Hello everyone. I'm pretty new to all this mechanic stuff, so bare with me please.
I am the proud owner of a wonderful 1987 F150 5.0 Lariat XLT.
It was running beautifully for weeks (after some minor electrical issues).
One day, I started it right after lunch, and noticed something horribly wrong.
An awful rattling noise was coming from the passenger side of the motor.
Upon further inspection and some light throttling, the noise only grew worse.
I turned the key to OFF, but a few cylinders continued to run. I turned it back ON
and all cylinders came back up. I repeated this at least 3 times, until it died while in the ON
Position. Absolutley heart breaking. I've put too much heart into this thing to give up.
Ladies and gentlemen. I'm at the end of my rope. I am in some moderate debt and I just do
Not have the money or the know how to send it to a mechanic. I have plenty of
Mechanically inclined comrades, I just have to tell them what the plan is. (Mind you,
This truck has 230,000 plus on it.)
Any common problems? Fixes? Tricks? Or should I undergo swapping the engine?
Where should I go for a new engine?
Not sure what to make of the cylinders still running....Was it just “dieseling”? How long did you leave it in the off position? What happens if you try to start it again? Did you loose oil pressure? What sort of electrical work did you have to do to get it running? Is it carbed or EFI?
Going off what you have said so far I’d check codes, look for metal in the oil, and depending on the rattling check the pushrods...
As you probably know, "awful rattling noises" usually mean a new engine is in order. If you are on a budget, local junkyards are probably going to be the best place to get a reasonably priced, running replacement. You can swap an engine in a weekend if you know what you're doing and have some help.
