I just picked up a 1998 Nascar F150 really cheap and this will likely turn into my daily driver. I know there is a forum here for these trucks, but I figured I might get a better response to these non-Nascar specific questions. I've been searching most of the day on this forum and a couple others and cannot get consistent answers.
This truck has manual windows and appears to be manual door locks. The door locks do not have a push button to lock them, but they do automatically lock and unlock with the operation of the ignition switch. This tells me that there's obviously actuators in the doors. Does anyone know if there is a "brain" that can be programmed on F150's that do not come with factory power door locks?
I've tried programming a couple key fobs and none of them take.
The aggravation is that every time I turn off the truck, both doors unlock. Sometimes I forget to reach over and manually lock the passenger side door.
It's almost gotten to the point that I might take the passenger door panel off and disable that actuator.
I also need to replace my door panels because a previous owner cut holes and mounted some aftermarket lock or window switches.
Another option I thought about was to find a donor truck and convert mine to power door locks and maybe power windows. Does anyone know if I should already have the factory wiring at the kick panels or somewhere and I could just plug n play?
Also, does anyone know if regular and ext cab front door panels are all the same. I've read some places that they are and I've read some forums that say they are different. There are lots more ext cab donor trucks in my area then there are regular cab.
Sorry for the long winded write, just trying to clear up contradicting things that I've found on the web.
Since the panels have holes where switches used to be, why not add switches back in to control the locks?
I'd much rather the factory look, if I went that route. Those aftermarket switch mounts are junk, plus I wouldn't even begin to know where to look for switches for them.
In that case I'd start scouring junkyards to see what you can come up with for door panels and switches. You can also try finding junkyard parts on: http://www.car-part.com/
