03 Expy EB Rustproofing

Alright ladies and gentlemen;

First new car I've ever bought, and I'm looking for suggestions for rustproofing. I turned down the dealer stuff. They quoted me 2500.00 and I thought that was a little excesive.

I also always thought whatever they put on at the factory these days does a pretty good job without extra protection, but sitting under my 03 I don't see any. Looks like clean, unprotected painted surfaces.

I see the thread on rusty doors and thought I'd ask the question.

Have you looked for the local Ziebart franchise?

Paul;

I'm kinda looking for people with old trucks that have used a particular service or none if that works, and still have a decent looking truck.

Zeibart is one, RustCheck is another. Who has experience with these on a new car?

All modern cars and SUV's use double sided galvanized steel parts. This means that you do not need underbody rustproofing. I have bought a number of Ford cars the last few years and have never seen body rust unless the paint was chipped or broken due to an accident. Save your money

Now that's the kind of advice I like to hear.

Any others?

Perhaps you should review comments on this site about Ford Expedition door rust before you become too confident. Galvanizing is becoming a more common process, but is by no means universal.

Galvanizing is by no means a guarantee against rusting. The base metal is steel, coated with a thin layer of zinc. The zinc is more reactive than the iron in the steel, so it will corrode sacrificially. Once the zinc has corroded from an area, the steel will begin to corrode. Having an area under constant conditions that promote corrosion (trapped water or salt or both) will yield red rust eventually. If the integrity of the zinc layer is broken (scratched, bent and cracked, etc) you can also get red rust rather quickly.

As far as special coatings to prevent rust, I would recommend skipping them and concentrating on minimizing the factors that will create rust. Take the time to thoroughly rinse the undercarriage, especially after diving on salted roads or 4 wheeling. Also, garage the vehicle if possible. Wet/dry (morning dew, rain) cycles and acid rain are nasty to the paint.

None.

When I took possession of my new Expedition in October 1998, I had leased it. As such, investing in rustproofing didn't make sense at the time. I bought the vehicle at the end of the lease and am now noticing some surface rust underneath the vehicle in the area of the spare. Ford does not undercoat these vehicles except in certain sections of the rear wheel wells (to protect against gravel damage from rolling tires). In the past, I had used Ziebart on other automobiles. Good protection, just remember to take your vehicle back annually for a touch-up.

5 years and a little rust under the spare, that's pretty good. Are you in a rust/snow belt? How many miles?

66,000 miles in NE Pennsylvania. Note however that the truck is developing the door rust problem. I also wash the vehicle at least once a week regardless of weather.

So if you had to do it again, see the rust you have now, what would you do?

I would have rustproofed it as I now intend to keep the vehicle until it's dead. Rustproofing also has some sound insulation qualities that I would have found desirable. I also suspect that rustproofing would be cheaper than having to repair rust damage on four doors.

Really, if you only intend to keep the vehicle for three or four years, it's probably not worth the bother. However, if you intend to keep it until the wheels fall off, rustproofing may delay that event for a few years.

Have you guys explored the option of using a Rhino Liner or other pickup truck bed liner as underbody rust proofing? I have heard this notion tossed around before. It protects truck beds from dents, dings, rust, the elements, etc. and is a rather durable product, with chemical resistant properties as well. I recall one individual even painted the exterior of his truck with it (somewhat extreme -- I'm just thinking of underbody).
