Not to bend your ear too much. new/rebuilt FoMoCo carb, dist, alt/volt reg, clean gas tank, filters, lines it should run and it does. But it dies. Fuel pressure from new electric pump 5lbs, timing good can't figure it out. I'm an old man and Ray is my age 79. We have forgotten more than we remember.acts like it is starving for fuel, changed elec. fuel pump, I get it running just fine and drive it around the block or two and must tow it home.
Not anywhere near your league, but a few questions and thoughts.
- Have you checked to make sure that it''s a fuel issue? (accelerator pump squirting or whatever)
- Will it fail if you just leave it at idle?
- If not, maybe it's some piece of stuff ( I know that it shouldn't be) that gets sucked into the fuel line with high flow and then floats back
- Maybe some kind of electrical failure with power/ground to the pump -- something that heats up and fails
- Float sticking intermittently
Just some things that you didn't mention checking.
Good Luck,
hj
ps if you post in one of the sections more specific to your vehicle, you might get some more detailed answers. ( DOn't know how active the engine sections are, but the vehicle ones usually are pretty good).

Thank you. I appreciate your thought and consideration.

Reason: some catch up. The gas problem is solved and we worked thru two cylinders not firing, compression good and cleaned and gapped
Thank you. I appreciate your thought and consideration.
It is obvious that I need some pilot instructions for this forum.. We resolved the fuel issue on the main tank. Went for a little drive. 2 cylinders not firing, compression good, cleaned plugs replaced wires and distr. cap. runs good! then it just quit on the street,. would not start, arranged for a tow, then it started and I drove it home. Go figure. Electrical has an issue. what a wonderful day. 3 days in a row no rain..
Easy stuff first: Connect a fuel pressure gauge at the carb inlet and see if the pressure drops off as you drive it. If so I'd say a kinked line, something in the tank that's blocking the pickup tube, or the tank isn't vented and going into a vacuum.
If it's not a fuel problem; if the distributor is electronic it could be failing when it gets hot. Points/condensers can do this too, but it's rare. The ignition coil can also be getting weaker as it heats up. Heat raises the resistance in electrical systems so even the wiring, connections, ignition switch, ballast resistor, etc. could cause the problem you're having.

thank you.. I'm ringing it out one failure at a time. 2 staps back to get one forward.
