So I had a little boo boo yesterday and jack knifed my utility trailer and dented my right side rear bumper. Found 1 on ebay. Looking at it from underneath I cant really tell how it comes off. Anyone know the procedure to change out the 1 side? I did a search on the internet but come up empty for a 17.
Thanks
I looked into this when replacing the license plate lights on my truck. The tow receiver gets in the way trying to change these lights out. There were more than ample enough bolts to hold that thing on back there haha, I'll try and take a picture tomorrow and show you which bolts to remove.
Are you just talking about removing the rear bumper? It’s pretty easy to do with just one person. It’s not as heavy as you might think. Lay a piece of cardboard down to set it on before you pull it off cause your hands will be full (due to size, not weight). Disconnect the sensors first if you have them.
Two bolts near the receiver opening, two bolts under each side (IIRC).
When you put new bumper on, install bolts but don’t tighten them - you’ll need to tweak the alignment of time bumerleveling it from left to right and making the gaps equal all around. Make sure the tailgate doesn’t hit the bumper when fully lowered. Then finish tighten the 6 bolts and reconnect sensors. Probably 20 minutes of actual work (the second time you do it).

Exactly and easy as pie, the hardest thing for me was aligning correctly. haha
Everytime I would think I got it aligned it was off just bit.
I would search craigslist before trying to just do one side. I just sold my rear bumper for $250. So they are fairly cheap.
I looked at this a little more and see where I can remove the 6 bolts to get it off. Someone told me I would be able to remove the right side without removing the whole thing from the truck. I will remove the whole thing when my rh side comes. Found one on ebay for $95.
Thanks
Not sure about the "just the right side" part. The bumper is one solid piece all the way across. Are you talking just the plastic insert, or the whole bumper? I guess you could sell/buy just the right side and saw yours in half, weld them back up, grind and paint it into a single steel unit. More than $200 bucks in labor to do all that vice just replace a whole bumper.

The Bumpers are 2 piece covers. The real "bumper" is behind the chrome shells. I only damaged the RH shell.

Huh. Well, I guess I learned something today, thanks. Had my rear bumper off a few months ago and guess I didn't look close enough, as it seemed like one solid piece to me.
Did you ever figure out if you can just remove the chrome shells on the sides? I want to vinyl wrap them this weekend, hoping to just take the chrome shells off and wrap and replace.
It's mainly removing the black plastic bumper caps from each bumper shell. The end cap pieces have two bolts that will spin during the removal process. During reassembly make sure the bumper cap tabs are seated properly or they will bend and break.

Do you think it would be possible to remove the plastic top, or at least enough to wrap the chrome while it's still on the truck?

Funny I was just coming here to ask this very question when I seen this thread pop back up the other day. Would be nice to leave chrome mounted to have two hands to really work the wrap. I wrapped one mirror cap off truck and one on, night and day difference when left mounted to vehicle in terms of difficulty.
