I purchased a 2000 EB with the 3.73 tranny. I noticed after I purchased the suv that at 7 mph I get a mild shudder or rumble strip effect. I researched past posts and found different fixes. I'm looking for your opinion now.
I have had the entire tranny flushed including transfer case. The mechanic replaced with Mercon V (he swore to use it instead of plain Mercon). I have had the GEM module recalibrated. Both of these had no effect on fixing the problem. Another dealer told me that the problem was that several coils were bad in the engine and that I needed to replace all of them with a new redesigned unit. So I did at the cost of $1,600! Now, the shudder doesn't seem as bad, but is still noticeable. Does any know what else it could be?
Wow, $1600, seems like you could have got a whole new engine for that....well almost. Coil packs are about $80 each and then a few hours labor.
It's hard to diagnose a problem over the net, but somebody may have had a similar situation and can help. With these computer controlled engines, it's easy for one little defective part to wreck the whole thing.
COILS at advance auto parts $48.00 or I bought 2 on E-bay for 52. We had the rumble strip noise and a trans flush hopefully fixed that and now I have a miss that I can not find.
I had the tranny shudder rumble strip sound on my 5.4 2000 EB 2wd 4r100 tranny. Here is how I fixed it. I had the dealer flush the transmission. They put in the wrong tranny fluid (MerconV). I drove a couple of hundered miles with this fluid. The problem was definitely better, but I could still feel it. Next, I convinced the dealer to flush the system again and refill it with the correct fluid (Mercon). Works like a charm now. I haven't felt the shudder once since.
It has been a little while since I have had the problem, but as I remember, the rumble strip noise happend right as it shifted into overdrive. I would say it happened around 40 to 50 mph most of the time. But I guess it could happen at any speed for any given Expy.
I don't know which tranny you have, but if you have the 4r100, I would have your MerconV replaced with Mercon. This is my opinion and Fords suggestion. I know many mechanics say MerconV is fine, but just because it is a newer and slicker fluid doesn't mean it is fine for the 4r100.
I really don't think that the accidental MerconV put in my tranny then switching back to Mercon fixed the noise. I just think it is because the twice flushing finally cleaned out whatever was causing the noise. And when we talk about rumble strip sound, that is exactly what I heard. I thought for awile that I was really running over something in the road. It was just luck that I had my tranny flushed two times. If they had put the correct fluid in the first time, I would have probably just lived with the noise. After all, everything still worked fine.
