TTY after HG

My truck 2006 F-250 (before I had it), had oil cooler, EGR cooler, HG's all replaced by Ford back in 2012.

When they did the HG would they have used TTY head bolts since it's a 6.0, or would they have used the M14 since it was done in 2012?

How could I tell the difference?

FYI, highly doubt Ford did studs unless the customer agreed to pay the difference for parts.

I have a local Ford dealer that does studs normally, and charges for.

I highly doubt it’s studded. But if it’s bolts in there, is there a way to tell if it’s the ****tier TTY or the M14?

Pretty sure they are all M14, regardless of if they were redone or not.

I think the 6.4 used a M16.

Were you told that if the dealer replaced the TTY's they used a larger bolt?

To maybe clear this up, the threads into the block of a 6.0 are M14. This is the metric equivalent (14 mm) of approximately 9/16". All the bolts and studs that hold heads onto 6.0 blocks are M14 thread, to go into the block. The stock Torque-To-Yield bolts are weaker than studs like ARP, and TTY bolts are not reusable. That said, TTY bolts last plenty long for many people, and lots of cars use them, not just this engine.

Ah. Ok thanks. I was under the impression that the TTY were a weaker bolt than the M14. Like as if it were an inferior metal.

I'm gonna put studs in soon. I suspect it's a job I don't wanna tackle on my own. Probably pay someone to do it.

M14 only refers that it’s a Metric bolt, 14mm in diameter. There are different threads per mm, which effect strength, as well as all types of grades of steel and heat treatment that alters strength (clamping load).

For what it's worth I read somewhere (on FTE I think, but if not, one one of the other sites I read occasionally) that TTY bolts got a worse than deserved rap because of an auto torquing device used at the International plant when they produced these engines being out of calibration so the bolts weren't being torqued to spec. Supposedly this was discovered sometime in early 05 and corrected. They still are a weaker clamping devise than ARP studs, but not as bad as first believed. It must be true, I saw it on the internet. lol

Interesting! It would explain all these guys running around with TTY and having no problems.

I have no problems with mine - yet. They were replaced by ford when the EGR failed, but to my knowledge the gaskets never failed.

They were ISO 9001 as we were, so maybe a run between calibrations could have been out, but not years. Then those that were out would have had to been pulled back and certified acceptable after testing. I could see them altering the composition of the bolt so the torque could be increased, if somehow that could have been misconstrued.

That's why I started the post with...'For what it's worth'... And ended with 'I saw it on the internet'......lol
