Problems with my '86 F250

So I've got a 1986 F250 with the 6.9 diesel and I bought a whole clutch kit for it when my throw out bearing went out. Well in the process of it sitting and waiting for me to get around to it apparently someone walked off with my battery terminals and the wire that connects my 2 positives on the batteries. Tonight I just finished the clutch kit and went to connect the batteries and fire it up when I noticed these were missing so I went to napa and got some new terminals and a new wire to connect them and when I got it all installed, the whole positive wire got really hot and started smoking and I wasn't trying to start it, I didn't even have the keys in it. Any ideas on what my problem is?

Sounds like a really bad short or something hooked up wrong.
