2018 F-150 offers a 4G Wifi hotspot. I do not think this available yet on the Super Duty 2017 or 2018. Does anyone know if you can take the part from the F-150 and install it on the F-250 to have this option?
Thanks,
Brian
You can definitely buy the modem, and unlock or start the truck remotely via the phone.
Don't confuse this with the factory installed modem for "Sync Connect". The SD does not and will not have Sync Connect any time soon (if at all). Sync Connect is Ford's version of GM's OnStar (app to control vehicle, check fuel level, check location, etc.) and includes the 4G hotspot thing. Sync Connect is only available with a very limited number of 2018 Ford vehicles, including the 2018 F150.
What this post is referring to is the "Ford Remote Access" app, hardware (VSS, RMU) and subscription ($50/yr). You should be able to find numerous threads about it on this forum. Search for 'bobby' and 'banner ford'.
Yes, just to be clear. I am referring to the ability to use my truck as an internet hotspot on the road for myself and kids while traveling. The F-150 now has the 4G available in the 2018's .
Thanks,
Brian

I just hotspot my phone for my kids when they are on their tablets. Personally I didn't see the need to have another bill if a vehicle I am buying has a wifi option.
I have OnStar in my '16 Cadillac ATS4, and I had it in the '16 Z06, which included the 4G hotspot. When the "free trial" ended, I never subscribed to keep it going. Paying another 4G bill seemed redundant when phones could be used as hot spots.
Might as well take the $$ you would be paying for the in-car 4G coverage and upgrade your cell phone data plan to unlimited data.
I did read a couple posts somewhere where some people claimed that the 4G hot spot in their vehicle was, at times, able to get a signal when their phone(s) didn't, but I never saw that myself, so take it for what it's worth (hearsay).

According to Ford, SmartLink should finally be out early next year and it`ll give you a 4G WiFi hotspot for up to eight devices plus it`ll give you the same features as Ford Connect and yes, there will be a monthly data charge.

Some cell plans unlimited data locks out the Hot Spot. I have unlimited data on my phone, but I'm locked out of using it as a hot spot. Sometimes it would be nice to have a hot spot in the truck when we take our long 1000 miles trips to our Cabin. My wife has a wifi only Ipad.
With that being said the price would have to be reasonable for me to justify it.
The unlimited Verizon plan on my phone comes with 2gb hot spot, already included in the monthly price I’m paying whether I use it or not. I haven’t checked on the ford plans, but I’m betting they are roughly $20-25 for 2gb. I, too, had a gmc with the hot spot and didn’t renew after the free period (nor did I use all the data during the trial period).
If you need more than your hot spot offers, I highly recommend looking into a mifi. It fits in the little drawer up front and can be charged by the USBs in there. Plus, you can remove it and use it wherever necessary (camping, hotel, etc). This is what I do to supplement my phone when I need to.
Why limit yourself to WiFi only available while in the truck when you have options that are much more portable? I did hear (or read) that the WiFi in the truck was supposed to have service where others don’t, but I never witnessed this in the gmc. Just my $.02.
The 4G / LTE hotspot in the '18 F150 is an ATT serviced plan. It is $20.00 a month for unlimited data. I didn't think I would turn on the hotspot in my '18 F150, but decided to before a 2k mile road trip. It is worth it. 3 teenagers and my wife managed to use 24 gigs of data while streaming netflix and watching videos. We drove from Houston to south central Ky over thanksgiving and it never lost service. Even in places where my ATT iphone had a weak signal, the hot spot in the truck still had a strong signal.
