Afternoon everyone
got my first Ford on Labor Day, 2017 cab/chassis flatbed 6.7, I’m looking for recommendations on oil brand and type. I live in South Texas where winters are usually mild and summers are freakin hot. Thanks
I'm down in South Louisiana. My dealer has me running 15/40 Motorcraft because of the heat. On my 2005 6.0 I was using Rotella T 15/40 and when I got this new truck I took it to the dealer for first oil change and that's what they put. So I got my bill and dam it cost me $5 more for them to change my oil than I can do it myself buying everything at Walmart. So now I'm thinking I'll just let them do it and no mess or disposal of old oil. Then the dealer is like 12 miles from the house where's Walmart is 25+ miles away. I think I win.
Valvoline premium blue extreme synthetic. Defiantly made the truck quieter too. I would run motorcraft synthetic but it’s impossible to find and expensive at the dealer.
Most of the fuel stations in North Texas I buy from sell "up to 5% biodiesel."
Don't know if it's the same in South Texas but Ford recommends 5w-40 or 15w-40 for biodiesel blends up to B20.
I went with Kendall based on the recommendation of a fellow in the oil and lubrication business. And chose 15w-40 over 5w because of the warmer weather in Texas.
Another good option is Chevron Delo 400LE 5w-40 synthetic in the CJ-4 formulation. Its in the grey jug, picked up 4 more gallon today at Oreillys and saw it at Walmart over the weekend. I switched from the T6 and my regens were about every 250 miles, with the Delo it went to 450 miles average. Just my .02. Long time T6 user but after the debacle with CJ-4/CK-4 changeover and seeing how the Delo is doing, I wont use it any longer. To each his own.
Any decent conventional HDEO 10w-30 or 15w-40 meeting Ford's current spec (a nod to their **** retentive desire for phos ...) will do fine in TX, and just about everywhere else.
What Ford "recommends" for some conditions leads folks to believe they must run a syn. That is not true at all. Ford only "recommends" grades for service factors. They "require" lubes that are licensed to their spec, to be covered under the OEM warranty. Although, lubes that offer their own warranty can also apply, as long as they are recommended by the aftermarket lube company for the application coverage (ie Amsoil, RL, RP, Valvoline, Castrol, etc). Warranty coverage needs to be understood in context of the M/M Warranty act, something else the bulk of the public grossly misunderstand.
Just don't waste your time thinking you need the "best" oil; there is no such beast. There are a lot of very good oils; all of which will protect the engine quite well. Use your time to worry about other things. And you don't need to spend a fortune on expensive syns, either. For example, there is Harvest King (the Rural King farm supply house brand) that is on the list in both grades. I also see Traveller (Tractor Supply house brand). Very economical and approved by Ford! House brands offer a very good value for the money, and still provide all the protection of OEM approval.
Thanks for all the great info you guys, my “change oil” msg has not come on yet and I’m at 6100 miles. I’m thinking of changing it anyway very soon. The regen mileage info was interesting, I was parked one day checking cattle and just happen to near the exhaust and thought where the hell is this amount of heat coming from. It was hot enough to burn the paint off the bottom of my right rear tool box. I’m probably going to a muffler shop to have them extend the exhaust pipe to flush to the flat bed. Thanks again everyone.
That's because Rotella (called Rosmella by the Dodge boys) makes the Cummins smell like a polecat. I love Rotella oil, but quit using it when I had the Cummins. It smelled so bad that it was embarrassing to take my daughter to school.
The Powerstroke is a different animal all together. (definitely not a polecat)

What was the dealer charging you for oil and filter change?
Lubrication engineers 5W40. My oil change light came on at 6800 miles with Motorcraft 15W40. Ever since I put LE 5W40 in my truck, I get to 7500 miles no problem and further without a hint of that light coming on. Its a really good oil, one of the better oils on the market.
