Now the harmonic balancer Might have came from the 1978 351m. Or it may have been stock to the original core 460 which if I remember correctly came from a '73 car engine. Or it was something that happened to come w that used 460 I originally bought. An I going to run into issues using it?
Found it!!!!!!!!
FyI so this causes wierd vibrations going down the road, couldn't make it vibrate sitting still. Then eventually the starter grinds and quits quits engaging.
I think this happened because the cracked flywheel was weighted, when I was supposed to not
Update: I put a new internal balance SCAT brand flywheel/flexplate on.ALSO a new mini starter. I might have 500Mi on it by now and I'm pretty sure that it is also broken. Started not engaging properly or quietly, and now not at all. De ja vu
My bell housing bolts were definitely still tight, and I tightened the flex plate down evenly(did not tweak it trying to install it).
So OE external balance flex plate lasts me 5K miles, while the proper type if aftermarket lasts 500mi. What is causing me to eat flexplates guys??
Clocked? Does it matter how they line up,as long as the holes fall in place? Specially if the flywheel has no weights. .
not knocking your idea. Just trying to find a solution
I'll definitely look into that. But I've never ran into an issue with lining up the torque converter in a special way. .
I do have the sheet metal plate in between the block and trans.
Would solid engine mounts and stock rubber trans mounts have any effect?
It's a new longblock from AutoZone. Ordered for a 78 f 150. Apparently f100s didn't have the 460 option in 78
Ford changed crank pilot design on these in 1971. Each design used a different converter. The flywheels should be the same, but the converter must match the crank.(see pics)
Going to have to wait till the tranny is dropped to measure that.. I shouldn't have anything pre 1971 on that truck though. Maybe I didn't see that when I ordered the converter though.
Update. Been awhile, had to build a new shop and then a few financial issues .But..
Now I have the trans out. All of the bolts were tight. Flexplate is NOT cracked. The crankshaft pilot and tourque converter ARE the correct 1 3/8 match for each other. I can't find anything wrong.
Only thing I can figure now is the starter itself worked it's way out away from the crankshaft until the gears were grinding instead of meshing. Based off the slight wear marks and all, the gear is pushing in the right depth. So it's nothing a shim will affect.
i guess I'll put the trans back in this week and check to see how much wiggle room the starter has. I don't believe my problem is inside like last time .
