Adaptive steering, worth it?

I’m close to ordering a new ‘18 250 and was wondering what everyone thinks of the adaptive steering option. I see that the price increased on the ‘18MY and I was curious if it’s worth it and if the benefit will outweigh potential maintenance costs down the road?

Drive one with and without, low speed around a tight parking lot and decide for yourself. I love mine and it was part of my special order list. Others may see fit to do without. I'm sure whichever route you go you'll soon get used to the truck, with or without it. I've not heard of any maintenance issues with it. That's what warranties are for.

I really like it. After towing about 1600 miles last week, one thing I really appreciated was the "desensitized" steering it provided in Tow/Haul mode. The very tiny steering inputs you make as the rig trundles down the road are minimized in this mode. It made for an almost effortless tow especially on bumpy California freeways.

For day-to-day driving I appreciate the reduced effort needed to obtain certain steering angles over what I had in my previous truck. This is most noticeable when parking (or even maneuvering a trailer).

Of all the gizmos you can get on the new Super Duty, adaptive steering is really good value.

Adaptive Steering

I purchased a 2017 F350 Lariate from dealer stock which included Adaptive Steering. It took a little while to get used to the way my trailer backed with this function but now would definitely order it on a new truck.

Good feedback. Sounds like the real advantage comes when your towing more so than everyday driving? I have arthritis bad in one wrist so I was thinking that it might make steering the beast a little easier at slower speeds than my 2010 250 is.

I have a '17 KR with it and a '17 XLT without.

I don't even notice the difference when I switch back and forth.

A post of mine from a few months back: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...l#post17133179 Now that I have driven my truck for a few months, I think this feature is brilliant.

I also am a fan, parking and maneuvering through tight areas is much easier. Mine is CCLB and really for it’s size I find it big but not overly if that makes sense. I would order it again.

I was lucky to end up with one of the few 2017 F350 XLTs to get the adaptive steering, before they deleted it as an option for the XLT. Really like it.

Great video, I was assuming there was a whole new complicated steering gear box to break down. I’ve had a little trouble with the one in my’10SD. I think I’ll get it based on what I’ve seen from the posts here. Thanks guys.

That is interesting. Back to back, Especially low speed, ie. parking lots and such I really feel the difference.

I also find that interesting. For me anyways when I drive other pick ups at work of similar or smaller sizes, I notice I have to turn the wheel quite a bit more to get around, parking etc.

It is worth it. My friend has the same truck as mine, but gas. He opted not to get adaptive steering. He drove mine and immediately commented on how much easier the diesels steered and that it seemed like he didn't have to turn the wheel as much to park. I was messing with him for a little while and told him this long drawn out story of how all the diesel people complained to Ford that the steering was way to heavy due to the extra weight of the diesel engine and that Ford made mods to the steering on the diesels to compensate.........he said he could understand. Then I told him I was just scre!ing around with him and it was bc mine had adaptive steering.

He now regrets not getting it specifically commenting on how much easier it was to park in a parking lot.
