I attempted to change my fuel/water separator this evening. I started to drain it into a Bucket. The book says 0.5G (2L). However I got 2 gallons and it kept draining. Anyone else have this issue? I have drained about a quart each month but this is the first time I have attempted to change the filter.
Did mine today and waited till it was 50 miles to empty. Only drained less than a gallon out of it.
Be careful with the filter under the hood there has been reports of people breaking the center fuel line..
The line on the left the tab lifts up and then you need to depress the sides and it pulls off..
I haven't done mine yet. The instructions I have is for 2017 models, disconnect the fuel line quick connect coupling from the in tank fuel pump. Here's a link for the instructions. http://www.fordservicecontent.com/Fo...ngEnabled=True Hope this helps.

In version 1 of the owners manual all they say to do is open the drain until it stops after about .5 gallon comes out. In version 3 of the manual the instructions say to disconnect the fuel line as your link shows. I'm sure that others have posted that the flow stopped on it's own and no mention was made of disconnecting the line. I wonder when the change occurred? It would be nice to know which instructions we need to follow.

Thank you, Great info to have been wanting to do this myself.
Always follow the latest version for the most up to date information.
I was thinking that the change in the manual may not happen at exactly the same time as the change on the truck so we could be in for a surprise when we do the filter change. Is the line they say to disconnect easy to get at or hidden between the tank top and the body?

First...the 3rd edition of ‘17 manual is wrong. There is NO WAY to disconnect anything from the fuel pump without dropping the tank at least a few inches .
Second, the book has the filter change order as the under cabin first then the under hood. That could just be a coincidence or actually the correct order to do it for some unknown engineering BS reason.
Third, I changed the under hood first. This may have created a siphoning situation that allowed me to drain 2.5 gallons before I gave up.
I have had not driven or crancked the truck since I changed the under hood filter or drained the under can water separator.
This afternoon I drained the water separator and sure enough...only 1/2 gallons came out. The rest went very quickly. I went by the book and turned on the ignition for 30 seconds 6 times. You could hear the air being purged and fuel flow into the filters. I wouldn’t drive it immediately after I change filters now after hearing all that.
I have cranked my truck but not driven it yet. I will in the morning.
I'm not surprised at what you found out. The top of a fuel tank would rarely be accessible and even if it was how would you see what you are doing. You have to wonder how this ended up in the manual unless there is a change that only applies to the 2018's. Thanks for posting.

I wondered about this very thing, and in fact crawled under there today to see what it would take to get to the top of the fuel tank. I still have no idea. Sure doesn't look like anything accessible to me. Mine is 2017 LB DRW.
