So I purchased a 2000 Excursion 7.3 with 180K miles last month. Yesterday I was in downtown Chicago. I had parallel parked and came back a couple hours later. I shifted into drive after being in reverse and the truck would rev up but not move. I shifted back into park and again into drive and the same thing would happen. Then I shifted down into 2 and the same thing. Shifted into 1 and had the same problem. I tried again in drive and gave it some gas. The RPM when up and the truck started to move. However, it would "Slip". Meaning it would rev at a higher RPM than usual. Eventually the truck started to act more normal after the engine warmed up. On the way home the truck was at 2000 RPM at 70. It seems like the truck is slow to shift or shifts at a higher RPM then expected. However, the shifting seems smooth and not clunky. I am going out in a few minutes to warm up the truck and then check the Trans fluid. Any thoughts you have would be greatly appreciated.
If you didn't have the trans fully warmed up (at least a 10 mile drive) and the engine idling in park when you checked the fluid then your check isn't accurate.
If the fluid level is good, there is an internal problem. It might be a loose feed bolt. That can be checked by removing the pan and the valve body. The feed bolts are then visible. If they loosen they will leak pressure and cause what you have seen.
If it isn't the feed bolts the trans is done and needs to be rebuilt or replaced.

i just got done with a 40 mile drive and checked it again. This time i kept the engine running in park. The level still looks good. It also seemed to drive fine today. I have a 200 mile drive back home today. I will drop the pan on monday and check the pan and those bolts.
