Swapping those would be a LOT of work. Besides, I think the lift gate is a vastly better design vs. the barn doors. That is one of many reasons I never liked the GM Astro platform.
The reason for barn doors is to be able to load a pallet with a forklift. Mostly found on work vans.
For most people the lift gate is more practical. Only one door to deal with, stays open on it's own, and keeps you dryer when loading in the rain.
Never having seen one up close, I don't know if those barn door hinges are welded on or bolted on to the rear body. Or if there are extra reinforcements behind them.
The hatch is bolted on, so you can remove that without much trouble.
I wondered about that myself. But hatch vans have indents in the roof panel, where the hinges mount. Plus, there's a latch in the middle on bd vans. I believe the bottom panel is shaped differently as well.
