1972 460 stalling issue

I have a 1972 460 in my 78 f250 4x4. Just had the carb rebuilt and the guy said he couldn't get it to run right. It's a Holley not sure what cfm but I'm guessing it's the 650. When I take off from a stand still sometimes it coughs and dies but if I catch it in time I can feather the gas and it will sputter a bit then take off. Other times it will take off like nothing is wrong. If I floor it from a stop and let off the gas it will die. I had a friend check it out and he thought the timing could be off so he tried to adjust the timing but the distributer would only move about a half inch in either direction and nothing seems to help. Any idea what could be causing this? I really need to get this thing running good before the snow hits.

Check for vacuum leaks in and around the carb's base, throttle plates, any and all vacuum lines and the booster, line and swivel valve.

How many turns out is yer mixture settings at?

Choke is adjusted correctly?

Carb's fuel lines and fuel filters clean and connections tight?

I'll give it a look tomorrow. If the timing chain was stretched would that cause any of this? I know its hard to time when its stretched and this motor is 45 years old. lol It also has a lifter tapping so maybe its time for a cam swap.

A wound out timing chain would cause a little slop in the plugs firing and be pretty consistent. You stated it happens occasionally.

A sloppy chain also has nothing to do with moving the distributor only a half inch in either direction.
You can check the play in it (timing chain) by removing the cap and observing the rotor whilst turning the engine over by hand....as in -when does the rotor move as to crank movement.

However, once you get into troubleshooting/replacing various components without the proper troubleshooting technique, you won't know what the original problem was...if it gets fixed.

Troubleshoot the vacuum and fuel systems first, then lets move on to another gremlin if needed. Try not to play Froggy on more than one system at a time.

A 45 year old virgin engine? - - -timing chain/gears/cam, berrins, et al? Have you a boatload of fruit flies buzzin' around that soggy cherry?
