If it is OEM tailgate it will have FORD stamped (embossed) in it, even under the dress panel.
I think it looks like you got that panel off a 68 to 69 tailgate, does that tailgate you got the panel off of have a handle that is hinged off one side only? You have some shop wall art now...
You need one of a 73-79, mounts with screws thru the TG into nut plate clips on the panel itself.

And here are some other ideas of what the pane looks like. Last pics is a earlier 67-69 TG on a 79. See that the body lines do not line up?
well the strange thing is the truck that I took the badge off of was a super cab dentside, I was going to pull off some trim pieces for my short bed, but they did not look in good shape so I passed.
As for the badge, A member said my tailgate is aftermarket (it is not embossed with the word FORD).
what are the actual dimensions of a 73-79 Rear Ford Tailgate badge.
Is my issue the fact that my aftermarket tailgate does not accept a standard rear FORD rear badge?

Tailgate finish panel pictured in post #13 is: C8TZ-99425A34-A = 1968/69 Custom Cab/Ranger & 1970 Sport Custom.
This finish panel is larger than the one the OP needs (D3TZ-99425A34-A), so it won't fit a 1973/79 Styleside tailgate properly (if it will fit at all).
See pic in post #1 for OP's "gypo" 1973/79 tailgate.
Dang ND you busting on me for a error by one year. Which I have since fixed...
So, I understand I now have some wall art for my garage, fortunately it was not too expensive, I did find one that a gentleman is willing to ship, it looks like the correct font, but the owner claims the dimensions are 56" x 5", could they just possibly be giving me an approximate measurement? Here is a photo the owner provided me with.
I am thinking that because of the font, it should be the right one.
In regards to the flat area of my tailgate, it only measures 3" tall, does the emblem not fit flat on the tailgate in that area?
Sorry for all the questions, I just want to make sure I don't make the same mistake twice.

so I found one that matches the font and the dimensions, but with the picture I received shows only 6 holes, whereas my tailgate has 10 holes in the area that the badge mounts, see picture below, does it appear to be the correct badge? I don't mind using only 6 holes, but not sure if they will line up properly.
i have a lmc truck tailgate in my bedroom currently and it looks just like the OP tailgate picture, minus the drilled holes. The spot welds look dead on to the picture in comparison to mine. Maybe a phone call to LMC truck could lead to a suggestion of something that fits that aftermarket, unlettered, TG? Truck Parts and Truck Accessories
shows tailgates, plain pn#49-8329
then mentions modification of panels, see pg 87 (referring to handle bezel).
49-2892 is the only FORD letter center panel they show on page 87 and no dimensions are given.
the 57-72 catalog page shows several clips and three versions of panel. Truck Parts and Truck Accessories
They have vague photos maybe a phone call will reveal better specifications?
Six holes is what is normally used. See the maroon bed with the yellow/faded white where the FORD is? That is what holes you will use.
You will need some clip on nut plates.
From what I can see on my tailgate, I just won't be using 4 of the holes as the holes in the maroon tailgate match up to 6 of the holes in mine. I am willing to bet those tabs in the back that do not have holes drilled into them, would match up to my other 4 holes. Thank you everyone for the assistance with this, I feel I am making a much more educated purchased this time around.
