I hate coolant messes

1975 F-250 460/ZF5/NP203

After changing out what I thought was a bad water pump, the coolant leak continued. It would not leak when the truck was running or when the truck was cold, only after shutting it down and waiting for cool down.

Its coming out from under the front of the intake manifold on the drivers side, right where the china wall, intake, and head come to a point. I must have not gotten enough RTV around the coolant passageway when I first installed the Edelbrock intake 6 months ago.

The truck runs great and there is no smoke so I am assuming its not getting into the combustion chamber.

When changing the oil I looked for coolant and found none. I must not be leaking into the valley.

So would you say that I should change the intake gasket? Has anyone had this issue before?

What is the best way to drain all of the coolant out of the intake and upper radiator hose? I have a pepcock on the rad but will the upper hose empty out past the thermostat? I hate having coolant spill all over the engine and the pavement.

Please share any tips and tricks that you veteran dent owners have learned over the years. I've only had mine for two years.

Thank you for your time.

Take the lower radiator hose, and the thermostat housing off and turn the waterpump by hand.

Are you sure it's not making its way out the weep channel of the timing cover back?

Avoid coolant mess

I use a shop vac and suck out the upper hose. After pulling the thermostat, and the lower hose, move the shop vac hose to the "blow" side and blow the collant out of the block thru the lower hose. Could suck it out also.

@PA74F250 - Yes sir, I finally found the dang leak. Thank you for responding though.

@meangreen92 - I did check the torque on the bolts and I did get about another 1/8 turn before the wrench clicked. Now that you say that... I should take those front two bolts out and put some PTFE on them.

Does anyone know if those two bolts get into the water jacket??

@black&blue now that is a great idea. Thank you very much for that!!!
