Transmission Problems
I have a 2000 Ranger XLT 4X4 3.0 Liter V6 engine and a 4R44E transmission with 350,000 miles. The engine still runs great doesn't use any oil, however, the transmission is shot. Having called around to different Transmission Repair Shops it looks like to have it rebuilt is going to cost between $1,500.00 and $2,200.00.. I bought the truck in 2010 for $3,000.00 and have replaced all the steering and drive parts in the front end, the alternator, other odds and ends and am currently rebuilding the rear axle assembly. I have checked several of the Pick-A-Part salvage yards in my area but have yet to find a 4R44E transmission which would cost $75.00 to $150.00 but with no luck. So here is my question; are there any other transmission that will work with that will work in my truck or do any of you know where I might get a 4R44E for less than $250.00 that works? At the present it is beginning to look like I will have to replace the engine with a 4.0 liter and transmission that will work with that engine, which I really don't want to do. Any help you may wish to give me or information that you would pass along would be greatly appreciated.
That is a typical price for a rebuild, payed around $600 or better to have my 5 speed redone after I found bearing cage pieces in fluid. Mainshaft, was messed up due to rail plug leak.
Several options as mentioned
Aftermarket rebuilt trans like jasper (expensive)
pull it junkyards, cheap but who knows what you are going to get. The trans might be the reason its in the junkyard to begin with.
hand it to you junk yards, probably around $500 usually with warranty of some kind and that might be a good option for you.
I see there is an LKQ near you that looks like its the "here is your transmission" kinda place and might be worth a try. they can also do all the cross referencing on what will and wont fit.
