Time for a coolant flush

Well it's time for a coolant flush and some new coolant, but the local dealer tells me that they don't carry Ford coolant and the SCA additive for the 7.3 motor any more as it's too old.
What coolant does everyone else use in their 7.3 ?
How good does it protect the o-rings and liners?

What change intervals does it have?

Any help will be appreciated.

Blue,
g'day mate.

I had been using this HiTec product:-

Hitec, High Tech Engines Need Hi-Tec Oils, PG XL-50 COOLANT

After all my coolant leak problem last year I filled it with
the green Nulon stuff supercheap sell.
Having solved the coolant leaks I will probably go back to
the HiTec coolant when I get motivated to change it.

I can't say how good a job it was doing having not been in
a possition to inspect any engine internals.

Hows your steering settling in?

Hi Brian, the steering is good the main problem seemed to be with the steering stablizer.

What water leaks did you have , oil cooler , water pump?
Did the change to the Hitec, High Tech Engines Need Hi-Tec Oils, PG XL-50 COOLANT cause any of the water leak problems.

Did you do a full flush , block plugs out etc?

Is the Hitec coolant premix?

Blue,
Glad you have got your steering sorted.

As for the leaks, I replaced the temp sensor in the water pump
and stupidly over tightend the tapered thread.
Made a small crack in the pump housing beside the temp sensor.
Eventually had to get it welded up.

I also had a leak at the rear of the oil cooler, the gasket had failed.
I ended up replacing the gaskets and both of the big "O" rings as
they had both become quite hard and showed numerous small cracks.
The cheap plastic radiator drain plug had become quite brittle and
had broken causing a slight leak there.

I don't think the coolant had anything to do with the problems
but I have no proof either way.

I did not go to extremes, just drained the system and refilled it.
When I get aound to dumping the green coolant and reverting to
the HiTec coolant I will do a full flush out.

The coolant is a premix, sold in 20 litre drums.

So your saying that after you flushed the system and refilled with the green stuff your probably at 30/70% not 50/50 , taking into account what water was left in the block.
Did you use test strips ?
That was unfortunate about the water leaks , what mileage where you at when you did the re-ring on the oil cooler?

Where do you purchase that Hitec from and at what price pre 20 lt?

Blue,
I did my best to open every possible plug I could find to dump coolant
and I realise that without a proper flush there would still be old coolant
in the block.

When I mixed the green stuff I mixed it 1 to 1 rather than the 1 part
coolant to 2 parts water, as the label recommended.

After a short run to do the weekly shopping I tested the coolant with
a test strip.
Can't remember the exact results but I remember it all being OK.

I don't recall exactly but there was around 250,000 kms on the clock.

Here is the link to where I bought the HiTec coolant from.

If you check on HiTec's web site you should find a dealer closer to you.

You've got me a bit confused Brian you said in post number 4 The coolant is a premix sold in 20 litre drums, and in post 6 you said you mixed it 1 to1 , so i looked up the site you posted and the coolant comes in pre-mix and concentrate.
So i figure you purchased concentrate, did you get the test srips from the same place?

This is why your test registered okay because you used concentrate.

Thanks for listing those links , i will now have to find a dealer in my area and ask some questions.

Sorry, seems to be some confusion.
I meant that I mixed the green concentrate at 50-50, not the Hi-Tec stuff.

Had test strips bought with a batch of stuff from the USA. I need to get more as those I have left have well past their use by date.

Yes i see , you were measuring the Nulon stuff , i think the concentrate would be better, i can't seem to find any CAT elc concentrate so the Hitec stuff will have to do, how long did you run it in your truck before you had the leaks?

I used the test strips on the HiTec. I did not bother with the green stuff as I had no intention of leaving it in for long, just needed to get back home from NSW.

I drained the coolant when I bought the truck and replaced it with the HiTec coolant.

I guess I did around 3,000 kms before I had to drain it to do various other jobs on the engine. I replaced it and tested it and it was some days later that I started getting the various leaks.

All this is a small part of the absolute shyte storm that my life in 2016 was. It is a year I could have well done without.

Sorry to hear that 2016 was a bad year for you Brian.

I have just re-done the oil cooler, radiator out, and new turbo so i think i will be ok as far as leaks are concerned.

Fitted new water pump, EBS and tube , radiator hoses, so it's nearly time for the coolant , i still have to ring the agent in my area.

Thanks for your time to answer the question.
