Good thread! I've been looking for a rear view that gives me a taller field of view, but still looks period correct or close. Anybody?

I was in Oreilly's the other day getting shocks for my mom's 65 Mustang, and noticed an end-cap on one of the aisles had some mirrors, and one of them was styled just like the Western low-profile style on my truck... except the backside was was more rounded. The ones on my truck shake badly... and I'm thinking more due to wind than to vibration. I wondered if it was due to the way the wind comes around the windshield since the front glass of our trucks is more upright than modern trucks... you know... not so aerodynamic. I was considering trying on of those... see if it's as shaky at 70 mph as the originals!

Type 5's on my 77. It had the factory holes and nuts that are part of the door for them, but someone had put big tri-mount aftermarket mirrors on it. I like the look of the smaller mirrors, so I got some repro's and put them on. Type 9's on my Bronco. I like the look on the type 3's and have considered putting some on my Bronco, but I think I'll leave the 9's.

So do your type 9's vibrate on the highway?

Curious too about that. My Delbar brand mirrors (almost a clone of the type-9) never vibrated, looked clean other than the slightly different mounting position and gave me a good view. Especially after I added the 4.5" round convex mirrors under the arms.
I hate the glue-on type obscuring the main mirror, so opted for the ones with the little arms that can be bolted to the main frame of the mirror. Work sweet on both my rigs.

That said, i want to try true Type-9 mirrors. I'll probably get them from Jeff's, but where do you all buy your replacement mirrors? Any other sources?

Thanks

Paul

The ones in my truck pics are the 5 1/4 x 8 1/4.

L/H 5 1/4 x 8 1/4
R/H 6x9 "square backs", I have seen then in all black also.

Problem is the both mount with a metal tab and it can rust and fall apart over time. That tab breaks apart about time you need to adjust them or they get a "tap" on something adjustment.

That's unfortunate to hear. The one on the left in your first pic has the same head shape and pivot type as the aftermarket Delbar brand. I wonder if they were the OE supplier, or just copied the design from Ford?

But that particular type at least has been very reliable for me. It's dryer out here by a long shot of course, so that might have a lot to do with my luck with them. Seen plenty of broken ones too though.

I just painted my black ones to put on the '68. Going to see what matching Peacock Blue lowers and Wimbledon White uppers looks like on an Early Bronco.
The stainless ones on the pickup might get painted too, but for now the brightwork looks pretty good. Once I get the real Type 9's though, we'll see.

I like the look of the angular backsides more than the rounded ones. Not sure if the aerodynamics of it all makes any difference. I just like the way they look.
REally like the passenger side being the wider angle type too. I didn't think I would because of being able to supplement them with the round wide angles, but I really do like the factory style of wide angle.

Were these wide angle types back then too? Or is that just a more modern style?

I have type 5 on my 75 f100 4x4. They give a nice clean look however are terrible for towing. lol Also can't get my passenger side to adjust, it won't turn in far enough to see from the driver seat. Thinking of going to type 9.

1967: The US Gov't mandated that all light trucks (FoMoCo: F100/350, Bronco & Econoline) had to have a standard equipment left hand outside mirror.

1967/72 FoMoCo light trucks used the 1967 Ford Galaxie/LTD 'plain jane' non remote mirror (C7AZ-17696-A), but it was not factory installed, as the dealers installed ALL types of the outside mirrors.

1973/79 llght trucks used a slightly different mirror (TYPE 5 in pic), its L/H only and had a truck part number (D3TZ-17696-L), so was not installed on cars.

LMC calls these 'plain jane' non remotes a 'sport' mirror but FoMoCo never did. There was an optional remote controlled R/H companion mirror (D3TZ-17696-K) for the 1973/79 L/H TYPE 5 mirror.
