5.0 Blocks

Was sitting in a buddy's garage one night drinking some beer and talking about SBFs and he brought up that a 302 will crack in 1/2 at around 500hp in a matter of time, I'm a die hard Chevy guy that likes Ford's also, I just know very little about them, I wanted to swap a 5.0 into my truck but if they can't handle it then I might as well swap a LS into it... Any more information or insight would be greatly appreciated... Thank you

I think if your HP goal is around 500 and you're worried about splitting the block, maybe a 351 or 460 would be a better start. Are you talking about a NA or boosted build?

No the factory 5.0 block is not reliable at that power but then you couldn't build a 500hp motor from an '80's GM 305 either, thin castings with 2 bolt mains.. they just weren't ever designed to handle the boost pressures and rpms necessary to reach those HP levels. The 351 block on the other hand is more than capable of doing it.

May have to look into a 351, I know all SBCs are the same size but is a 302 the same as a 351? This motor will be going into a Ranger

No the 351 block is taller and wider to accommodate the 1/2" longer stroke but that just means it's a regular sized small block, the 302 block is extra compact at only 18" wide which would be good for your application.

Alright, I should still have enough room, it will be tight but I think it shouldn't be to bad

351 will go into a Ranger, but header selection is extremely limited due to the extra dimensions. Check for more info on the two Ranger sites ranger station or ranger power sports. Far easier to go with a stroker 5.0 than a 351 in this. If you're truly dedicated to this power level, then invest in an aftermarket 5.0 block.

Dart SHP Block

Another alternatitive is the Dart SHP 302 block. You can get it bored for a 347 or a 363 stroker from Dart. It is much beefier but retains all mounting dimensions of the 302, and can handle well in excess of 600 hp. Cost is $2,700 - $3,000 depending on where you buy it. I can personally attest to a stock 302 roller block cracking when pushed to 500HP.
