Hello, all. In a week or so, I'm splitting my '85 4.9 with the TOD transmission to replace the clutch. Clutch itself is fine, but a mouse built a nest up in there and it just doesn't release right. If I'm splitting it to clear that out, might as well do everything. So, as for now, new flywheel, clutch, pressure plate, throwout bearing etc. I'm also planning to to the rear main seal, since I'm in there. I read a few people talking about using a newer 'double lip' seal? Anybody have info on that? Also, I intend to replace the master and slave unit since I'm there. Is there anything else I should do while it's apart? I mostly work on 30's and back cars, not much adjusted to these 'newer' machines.
On another forum [Fordsix Performance Forum], The Frenchtown Flyer said to use the double lip seal which is used on the modular V8s [I hope I am quoting him correctly].
On my son's 1984 and my 1986, both with 4.9L and manual transmissions, the 10" standard clutch was replaced with an 11" unit. The flywheel is drilled for both. The clutch kits only cost ~$25 more. The mounting bolts are different.
I'd heard about the modular seal, actually that's the very post I was reading. As for the 11" clutch, thats also what I was planning on using. I was looking at LuK clutches, seemed to be the most consistent good ones I could find people talking about.
