Sorry to combine subjects, but joined here to get more info and possibly find a trans I'm looking for.
I build street rods and muscle cars and like to use parts and combinations normally not considered. I put a large bell, short shaft C4 in my '31 coupe behind a 5.0 HO and it worked out great. I have a fiberglass '32 3 window I'm putting my 545 in and want to try the same style trans in it. Best I can tell, F250 2x long beds and some 4x's with divorced xfer cases came with a 351m/400/460 bellhousing and short tail shaft C6. Documentation is really kind of crappy so I thought I'd come to the source... you guys. What years/models did these trannies come in? I'm in SoCal and good junkyards are a thing of the past here so the more info I can get on these the better my chances of finding one.
The only year with the 351m/400/460 bellhousing and short tailshaft C6 was 77-77.5 F250 4x4 as far as these trucks go. So you've got a half year to look for if you don't want to do any parts swapping. Just look for a divorced transfercase and it should have the short tailshaft trans. 73-77 F250 4x4s all used the short tailshaft C6s for the automatics (67-72 should as well, but I'm not familiar with that body style), but 73-76 would have the FE bellhousing. If you've got an FE bellhousing short tailshaft transmission and one of any version C6 with the 351m/400/460 bellhousing, you can swap the short tail shaft and housing onto the other, but it will require a full teardown of both transmissions.

So the F250 2x's with 2 piece driveshafts used standard length tailshafts?
Given that you are using a 385 series engine (545), you might fare better on the 460 Ford forums, specifically. this one and this one. Look for posts by Frank Merkle as he is a recognized expert in building race-ready C6s.

Not so concerned with building at this point, just taking baby steps. Need to find one first and this style is kind of unknown outside of Ford trucks.
I fell into the one I used on the '31. Works great with ladder suspensions and I don't have the usual issues with slip yokes. I figured it would be a bit more difficult finding one for a BB than a Windsor.
