460 setting lash problem
Hi guys. I’m almost done with my 460 rebuild. It’s my first rebuild. It’s 385 Lima. New flat tappet cam. Nothing crazy just looking to get back to factory. I reused the push rods and rocker arms. They were in great shape with very little wear. I set the lash according to everything that I’ve found and read but I keep running into the same problem. The bolts keep coming loose. I tighten the bolt until the push rod has resistance and then another 1/2 turn. I have everything installed and ready to go. I timed it without the spout to ten degrees advanced. And after a minute or two tap tap tap. Pull the valve cover and sure enough another one is loose. I’ve pulled the covers back and forth left the right then left then right like four times each. I know it’s gotta be me so what am I doing wrong.

What these guys are saying is right. Make sure you understand the difference between stud mount and pedestal mount rockers.
However, you are right in thinking that you have to set the lash, preload the lifters. With pedestal mounts you set the lash by pushrod length and/or by shimming the pedestals.

With that said, if you can't reach 20 ft. lbs. on the pedestal bolt within about 1 turn of zero lash, that's when you'll need to shim otherwise the valves will hang open. Ideally, yea, about 1/2 turn from zero lash you'll hit the 20 ft. lbs. but if you don't hit the torque specs, nothing keeps them tight.
