Don't let it run until it stops as it will drain your fuel tank. As USS said, a few seconds will show if you have any water or not.
I changed filters today. Maybe I missed something but the damn thing drained for an hour , 4 gallons worth, I got tired of waiting and took it apart anyways and the result was one hell of a mess. The online videos I've seen they didn't have a mess like me, is there a valve or shutoff somewhere?

Reason: changed from 3 to 4 gallons lol
is it necessary to cycle the key (several times) to refill the filter/pressurize the system like i had to on my 2004?
Please excuse my ignorance (I'm used to it), but what is the reason to cycle the key? Are you talking about the ignition key? And what is the correct procedure for cycling? Yes, this is my first diesel, and I've had it less than a week.

In order to prevent the fuel tank from siphoning while draining the water separator for a filter change it is necessary to disconnect the fuel line quick connect coupling from the in tank fuel pump.
The procedures for changing both the water separator and the engine mounted fuel filter can be found on pages 360 to 363 of the owners manual.
Here is a synopsis for you...
Hope this helps, this can be a messy job!
Other members here have reported the fuel line connections going to the engine mounted fuel filter being cracked if not handled properly....
I still do not understand why one has to crawl under the truck, face up to drain the fuel filter. First of all I am 77 years old and second I do not like Diesel fuel dripping down my arms and clothing to do this. On other Diesels I have owned a simple pull line would drain the filter when activated from with in the engine compartment.
This is the one major item I do not like about this truck!

I drain about a pint of fuel into a quart glass jar. I carefully loosen the drain with my whole hand, then open it (and close it) with my thumb and index finger to avoid the fuel. The whole job takes 60 seconds, and doesn't get a drop of fuel on my hands or the ground.
What does everybody do with what they drain? Trying to learn while I wait for the 2018s to start being built.
If you have any weeds that need to be killed it will do the trick. Or you can look for a waste fuel collector. If you have a really clean container and no water comes out just dump it back in with a funnel. As long as its clean it wont hurt going back in.
