Differential hubs

I am going to put a differential out of a f-2 that is ready to paint into an f-3 . I noticed the hubs are different on the f-2 rear end than the f-3. It appears that the axels are the same. I tried the f-3 hubs on the f-2 axel and it seems to be interchangeable. I guess the question is are the two axels the same.Or am I missing something. I hate to paint it up and install it and find out it won't work. I have another f-3 donor axel but will need to be sand blasted before it's ready to paint.

You've entered the Twilight Zone of early '48-'51 Lockheed 12" (F-2) and 14" (F-3) versus late '51/'52 Bendix 12" brakes. The Chassis Manual sections 1109 and 1126 for hubs and drums list a half dozen or more examples of "if this hub use with this drum or this drum". I'd rather not try to spell it all out because the numbers would be meaningless.

I learned from Chuck Mantiglia (Chuck's Truck) when he rebuilt mine that he had to replace my fractured '52 F-3 M-H axle housing. It lived a hard life. The axle he substituted was a '48-'51 F-3 axle. We learned that the early Lockheed equipped axles were slightly narrower than the later Bendix equipped axles. But the later Bendix brakes worked on the early axle. Chuck is a member here and may see this and comment if I've not said everything clearly. Or you might call him at his shop. Stu

Tried calling Chuck Thursday and Friday both, and he didn't answer his phone. Sent him an email too, and no response. Maybe went to Daytona or something.

Chuck is definitely the man with the knowledge on these critters.

Welp I think I might be in luck. I looked over the two axels and I found the same part number on both the axels. 4200-A-287.With a gear ratio of4.857. So I'm betting they are the same axle.I have a good set of 14" shoes and drums and rebuilt slave cylinders. So once I figure out the seals we should be set. Maybe paint next week.

Outstanding.

I will soon be going through the process of rebuilding the axle I got a couple weeks ago. Chuck located it for me in New Jersey. Still have to get the bearings, seals, ring and pinion, etc.
