I just traded for a 1962 F500 that runs and drives, 292 V8 and (assuming) T98 4 speed trans. The plan is to make a wedge bed car hauler, the 292 runs okay, but I'm sure down the line it will need changed out. Now to the question, has anyone adapted a post-carb era (89 up) 460 to a T98 or T18? I would think Ford parts would be available, I have a T18, but it's a 4wd trans. Thanks in advance.
I stumbled on this old unanswered thread and thought I'd offer some information in case the OP hasn't moved on or if anyone else ever needs it.
The '79 up 460 is externally balanced, so you have to use the correct flywheel. Assuming the T98 has the same bolt pattern as a T18, you will need to use one from '79 to '86 if you plan to use the T98, T18, or NP435 along with any manual trans bell from a 460 or 351M/400 truck. The flywheel got larger in diameter with a different pressure plate bolt pattern when they switched to the German ZF 5 speed with integral bell housing (which I believe was '87 but not positive). I think the trans x-member was riveted to the frame in those years, so you would need to cut it out and grab a bolt in x-member from a '65-'79 and drill a couple of holes to place it where it needs to be. If I was going through that much trouble I'd want a 5 speed, especially with a gas hog 460.
