has anybody got the msblaster virus yet?
it makes pop up even more anoying than they really are seems like every 5 seconds they pop up. and they are not just any other pop ups they are ****. it also makes the net very slow and not work in most cases. well i got a notification on it today and it told me to find the msblast***** file on your pc if you have it and delete it.then it said to setup a firewall , so i did and i got on the net to see if it worked and it did not. so then i got back off and then went to accessories and clicked on system restore and restored it almost a month. restoring it will not delete files that you have. then i got online and that did the trick. i erased the virus and emptied my trash setup a firewall to keep it out and then restored. the notification also said that the users who have the net and do not have a good firewall or have none at all are infected by this too just by logging on the net. does anybody else have or has had this problem?
I have a brand new laptop that I can't go online with, coz I need to download the firewall software first... I need to download the virus killer, and the MS security fixes. why the heck Dell couldn't load 'em for me I will never know. They, the faceless wonders at Dell, left instructions for me to log on to the Windows website to register my product, and receive the necessary updates to protect from malicious attacks.
I've always run firewall software and never run Microsoft email products (try www.eudora.com). I've never had a virus infection. It doesn't matter whether or nor my anti-virus software can spot the latest virus, I don't get burned because:
1. I have a firewall (www.zonealarm.com, the best out there and a free version is available as well).
2. I don't run Microsoft email products.
3. I don't run attachments ending in .scr, .bat, .pif, *****, .dll, .com, etc.
4. I have Windows set to display filename extensions so I'll know if a file fits in the above category.
5. I use Open Office instead Microsoft Office (its free, compatible with Microsoft Office and doesn't have the vunerabilities of MS Office).
6. I also use a hardware firewall/router for my broadband connection. I recommend a D-Link DI-604, $49-$69.
I get between 50-100 virus attachments per day from FTE members and it got beyond old and tiresome a long, long time ago. When I get one of these, I suspend their account and block all email from them (assuming I can id them from the virus email headers). I do this not because of ego, anger or "holier than thou", but because people have been cautioned for a long time about how to protect their computers, and whether or not they stand to lose valuable data, their infected computer threatens those who do have valuable data to lose.
My desktop is well protected, and I always pay attention to attachment file types, and to what I'm downloading. The laptop doesn't connect to often and the one time it did....
The blaster virus was infecting me the second I logged on. Took forever to download the patch and my firewall. Kept causing a system shutdown.
Needless to say, now when the desktop gets and update, the laptop gets one!
Ken, that is a nice office suite, I just spent the time to download and test it.. It seems great, thank you for mentioning it..
What browser do you use?? If I am to succeed in getting rid of the Microsoft products my computer came loaded with I need a good choice of none MS browser.
Use Mozilla browsers. I personally use Mozilla Firebird. This has tons more safety than Internet Exploder and blocks ALL pop-up adds. The only drawback is there are a very few websites that it can't open right, but that's no big deal.
I got one of them viruses at the end of July this year shortly after I got my new pc with the XP operating system. I figured out I got it before I even heard about it. I was another guilty one for not downloading the updates. After that incident I'm going to be a regular checker.
I now got my old pc with a upgraded 98second to XP, set up to be my home internet server in the hall closet. Right now I'm only using the XP firewall And it seems to work pretty good but I can only wonder how long this will last.
Hey Ken, (webmaster)
Does http://www.zonelabs.com software work in such a way if I install it onto my internet server computer, and will it protect the rest of the pc's conected to the main one through the home network? (if I need to explain myself better let me know) Right now just using the XP firewall on the server pc it stops them anoying windows xp popups on my other pc's.

I use Opera. They have a free version and a paid version. Or you can find Mozilla which is free. I still keep Internet Explorer handy for the occasional page Opera can't render.
Open Office is an open source project started by Sun Microsystems. It is robust enough to use for office work and considering the price (free) its a bargain (its a full blown office suite!)..... Only thing I don't like is there web site layout, hard to find the download link.
The more I use this office suite the more I like it. It imports all of my work - two books, written in different software - Word, and Ami Pro, with no problem, and formatted them to it's own without error - MS Word could not do that, which is why I had the Lotus version. I deleted both, and gained 460MB..
I will go look at the Opera one, and see if it suits. Thank you for the info.
