Thanks to some fine FTE advice, I now understabd that AVG 8.5 was also free -- so I installed it.
Did the custom installation, but I allowed myself to be talked into an IE 'searchshield' option. Should have quit when the next step suggested that I change either my home page or default search to yahoo ( can't remember which).
Anyway, everything was hunky dory -- until I went to update the virus database -- connection failed. Tried to open IE. Found another search toolbar from yahoo ( I have google), and a bunch of other cr*p. Couldn't connect. I managed to get rid of most of the cr*p (manage add ons), but still couldn't connect.
Uninstalled avg -- internet is okeydoke. Reinstalled -- without the searchshield (also no office plugin just for good measure). I can still find the internet. Hopefully it will now update its database. (I'm posting from a different computer)
One other noteworthy event. The install found my demo version of norton 06, and suggested that I remove it. Went to control panel, and got the message that it COULD NOT BE UNINSTALLED UNLESS A SUPERVISOR WAS LOGGED IN!
Told me to start Norton and log into my account. Well, it's still there -- hopefully doing no harm.
Symantec has a Norton Removal Tool for download that will take care of the previous version. Have run into that a couple of times. It seems that once Norton is on your system, it doesn't want to leave.

...so it hogs resources, then you can't delete it. Isn't that the definition of malware?

Make sure the Norton antivirus is the only thing on your pc before running the tool..
The tool will delete any Norton product it finds.. Like PC anywhere, Ghost or Backup software you may want to keep..
Well, I'm up and running so the old Norton 06 isn't bothering anything. I have it as disabled as I can manage.
I do know about the removal tool, but things seem OK. I was just a little astonished by the message. 'supervisor logged in' indeed
My main point was that the avg 'securescan' feature really did a number on me. Maybe it works miracles for some -- sure made me unhappy.
I use Norton 09 on this machine, and I'm reasonably happy with it.
I posted this warning about Norton 09 before...
Make sure you do not let your subscription end.. Norton in their stupidity will disable your antivirus and leave you wide open for attack.. Unlike old versions where you just wouldn't get updates, but it was still protecting you..
