AMP Research Bed Step

Has anyone installed the AMP Research Bed Step in their 2017 F250? I put one on my 2013 F150, and liked it, so I got one for the new F250. What a pain to install. They provide an access hole in the step frame to tighten 2 bumper nuts that you first remove. The hole does not line up with both nuts. It worked well for the top one, but wasn't big enough to get on the bottom one straight. I tried loosening up other parts of the step frame to see if I could get it closer aligned, which did not help. I then removed 2 of the step frame bolts which let me get on the bumper nuts straighter, but then I couldn't get the step frame aligned well enough to get those 2 bolts back in, so I had to completely disassemble the step and take it back to the bench to get it back together. Again, I could not get on the bottom bumper nut straight enough to torque it to the 80 ft/lbs they spec. I hope the 80 is a suggestion, not a requirement, as there is no way to get that much torque on at that angle. I emailed AMP to see what their response is, but have not heard back yet. Anyway, sorry to gripe on my first post. I have been following this forum for a year to research trucks, as I was on the fence about buying another F150 or moving up to an F250. I bought the SD a month ago, and am glad I did. If anyone has installed the Bed Step and has suggestions, I would be happy to hear them.
Thanks to all who contribute to this forum. I have learned a lot.

Hopefully it's acceptable to reply to my own thread. I did get an answer from AMP Research on the installation issue. The instructions don't mention or show it, but a wobble extension is required to get on the bottom bumper bolt to torque it. After getting one, I was able to get it done. Maybe this will help anyone else who installs this step.

Glad you worked it out. My F250 came with the tailgate step ladder thing, otherwise called an old man's ladder.

I have two Bedstep2 in box waiting for install. I played a bit with both the Bedstep & Bedstep2 at the SEMA show last week. Looks fairly easy to install and does what it is supposed to. The Bedstep2 is rated for 300#... which I am not over, but not far under either so we shall see.

I'm mid-270s in weight. I had the Bed Step on my F150 for 5 years, used it a lot, and it never let me down. This new one works a little smoother than the one before. I like them better than the "old man steps" even though I am an old man.

I too bought my first F250 3 weeks ago. It didn’t have the tailgate ladder so I have been researching the bedstep. I heard it was a pain to install. Good to hear feedback on the install.

The only pain was the one bolt I couldn't get onto straight. Every thing else was pretty straight forward. With the wobble extension, that one bolt torqued up OK.

I traded in my 2017 F250 that had a tailgate step and got 2019 F250 that doesn't have that handy tailgate step. I bought and installed one of the AMP Research Bed Steps and it doesn't seem to fit up nice and tight under the rear bumper. I can easily put two fingers in the closest area...is that as close as it gets when closed?

Thanks, just wanted to know if I had it installed correctly. Pictures I saw on the internet made it look like it fit tighter.

That is the way it is on mine as well. I think the idea is to be able to use a toe from the front side to lower the step. If it fit too tightly, a toe (at least my toe) wouldn't fit in, and one would have to bend down (harder to do each day) to lower it with a hand.

You got that right, a simple larger cut out in that plate would solve the access problem.
